  1. All of the RN FAA air attacks against the Tirpitz were planed and carried out with the element of surprise as a crucial part of the plan. Once the smokescreen obscured the Tirpitz in the narrow fjord the probability to hit the ship was far to low. There was no time for the Germans to scramble fighters and intercept the raids except by chance.

  2. The distance from Roi (Kwajalein Atol) to Wotje flown by Lindbergh with the 4000 lb loadout is about 165 nm. Thus this is the minium combat radius we can expect. It was a day with favorable winds to get the F4U of the ground.

The only question that troubles me is How many other developers could have actually completed and released  the Corsair during the past eight years, if this developer had not "marked the project as their territory" in 2015.

Since virtually no other 3rd party dev, except OctopusG, is making WW2 fighters for DCS I fear sadly no one. There are dozens of iconic WW2 planes besides the F4U other devs could have done, yet even 11 years after the P-51 was released we only have the ED birds and soon two Russian fighters.

  4. That at least is the one thing I don't fear. The devs could have released the F4U years ago, with old damage model and 3D model, questionable flight model etc., but they clearly aim for perfection and have no hurry or pressure to have it finished by a fixed date.

Its really sad..there is SUCH a big WW2 following that I don't understand why there is not more AC out there.

I don't know if DCS is old enought to remember...but "Back in the Day..." there was a game called IL2 - 1946  it was one of the biggest games to fly in. They also had FLYABLE bombers...nothing to crazy..you could fly and switch positions..it was AWESOME!! Servers were packed and we used to do a thing called Bomber Night where the 4 horseman hosted a server and every Friday night it was fighters against the bombers basically.  Great fun to be had...  So whenever this corsair comes out, make sure there is japanese AC to go against....Betty's, Zero's whatever ya can get. If ya can ..how about a Heinkle ??

From my impression interest in WW2 aviation has waned considerably in the last 15 years and is nowhere near the level it was during the heyday of Il-2 and CFS2/3. Cold War aircraft seem to fill this niche now, especially in DCS. Maybe people are more interested in planes they know from their childhood or which their fathers and grandfathers flew or worked with.

  6. It will be a summer 1944 map based on pre-invasion data:

We are eager to provide you with a progress update of the DCS: WWII Marianas map. Based on original US Military and Navy pre-invasion maps, many more plantations, settlements, and other cultural features were discovered. This has allowed us to create a highly-accurate map of the Marianas in the summer of 1944. Please read the details below and check out the Development Screenshots.

    ...

In order to accurately depict the Mariana Islands in the summer of 1944, the coastline textures and fields are being completely redone based on actual pre-invasion maps courtesy of the United States Navy and Military.  On the island of Saipan, all three Haruji Matsue plantations: As Lito, Chacha, and Marpi Point are being recreated. They provided tons of cane that was processed in the nearby sugar mills and taken to the Sugar Dock to be shipped to Japan.

    ...

The entire island of Tinian is also being recreated in high detail, and it comprises the original Japanese airfields. This large and mostly flat area is also where the first napalm bombs were used against Japanese soldiers hiding in the surrounding jungle and outlying small islands. We are also making improvements to the coastline, settlements, and palm plantations. For more, please check out the Development Screenshots

    ...

Shortly before the retaking of Guam by US forces in June 1944, the island was still under control of the Japanese, it consisted of very small villages occupied by the native Chamorro people. In the modern Marianas map, a lot of this area is covered by cities, but in the Second World War, the land was made up mostly of palm plantations.

Nope, but I assume there is probably a mechanical lockout that prevents it from moving.

Yes there is indeed, landing gear and hook controls are inter-locked.

The US manual (the excerpt is from the British Corsair Pilots manual) also recommends to place the arrestor hook lever in the parking position during combat, to prevent the lose of hydraulic fluid due to possible combat damage.

Mike Williams' site quotes a lot of tests that concern high and low blower settings, yet there's clearly three speeds on the charts. So which one is hig and low? And is there a "neutral" blower, which I seem to rember from somewhere, yet I can't attach it to any airplane right now.

Settings are Neutral - Low -  High, from sea level to altitude. About F4U-1 super charger control:

  9. This could be a good project in maybe 5 to 10 years from now, when the ever evolving nature of DCS might make an upgrade of the F4U desirable. Selling a new variant could cover the costs.

The F4U-4 not only has a more powerful engine, but also a completely redesigned more ergonomical cockpit, with some systems, as the intercooler or oilcooler flap controls automatized. Thus it would require more modeling and coding time than maybe apparent on the first glance.

  10. The Spitfire has a very limited range compared to naval fighters as the F6For F4U, which carry more than twice the internal fuel of an Spitfire.

During heavy ordnance test in September 1944 land based MAG-31 F4U-1Ds flew strike missions with three 1000lb bombs or even two 1000lb and one 2000lb  bombs from Roi to Wotje in the Marshall islands, which are about 150 NM apart.  The hellcat is only slightly larger than the F4U and has the same engine. It should be able of similar feats.
