If it will be AH-64D with Fire Control Radar you technically don't even need another guy to destroy 16 enemy tanks, FCR computer makes up for the gunner:

park behind some obstacle showing only FCR -> release 16 automatic guided Hellfire missiles to 16 targets detected identified and prioritized by FCR visible on your MFD -> RTB

There are good interviews with RL Apache pilots on YT. AH-64D has avionics designed the way each pilot can do everything with some small exceptions, especially when ORT has been replaced by digital display.

Mi-24 - or Desert Storm AH-64A - depends on gunner whole lot more (guiding optical and laser guided missiles, searching new targets with optical devices/FLIR) than AH-64D with FCR, computer and radar Hellfires.

It's like Tomcat / Strike Eagle analogy: In analog Tomcat or AH-64A both guys have different responsibilities, functions and cockpits, digital Strike Eagle or AH-64D can by operated by one crew member - second is there to decrease the workload.

It's not launching in EA with FCR though, right?

  2. Gotta say this is a very exciting evolution of VR technology. I'm tempted to splash out, but know that we'll see similar tech used in consumer-priced HMDs in the next couple of years.

Imagine if we could have this kind of clarity, with a larger FOV, AND DCS fps equal to the HMD's refresh rate? I reckon that's doable within the next decade.

Really? I have the 18 and Wags puts out a video every time they adjust a rivet, not sure what you're on about.

I'm referring to the in-game tutes, the ones which actually show you in realtime how the airframe works. In comparison, the Harrier looks like it explains everything there. The Hornet not only fails to explain the majority of the aircraft systems, but the tutes that are there are often broken. It's a pretty dismal state of affairs for new players.

Well to be fair, the G2 in DCS is really an amazing experience when it works. It's just a huge hassle to get it to work, and really requires some beefy hardware. I did manage to solve my system problems yesterday, also downloaded DCS world and a few modules\maps so fingers crossed I will be flying today after work.

Glad to hear you got it to a point that you are happy with. Alas I have not, so my G2 is merely taking up shelf space at the moment, and is occasionally dusted off when friends come over. I'm hoping I find the DCS VR helo experience more to my liking though, am going to give it a shot soon.

In my fumbling way to get the G2 working properly with my RIG. I did the following things:

Reseated my CPU, applied new thermal paste.

Deleted options.lua, removed all traces of Oculus Software

Installed WMR for Windows, WMR for Steam, SteamVR

    Followed Speed of Heat's guide

Experienced major crashes, strange glitching and performance bugs. (Probably due to previous user error when attempting to streamline my OS)

Installed a new CPU Watercooling solution. Rechecked that everything was properly ship-shape from a hardware point of view.

Lastly I tried to reinstall Windows, which I did, however Windows update decided to automatically download 20H2 and this completely destroyed my performance on my PC to the point where it now boots up for 45 seconds and even file explorer lags.

This where I am now. "Clean" (lol) Windows install, which feels like it's broken. No DCS World installed.

I have a 3000+ Euro PC which is basically a huge dust collector at this point. Do I blame Eagle Dynamics for this? No, i do not. Absolutely not. If there is blame to be assigned it's probably equally shared between Microsoft and myself.

Do I wish I had never heard of Eagle Dynamics and DCS World at this point? Yes. Yes I do.

You poor bastard. It's stories like this which are why I generally offer a counter-perspective when I see a "DCS VR is perfect! It runs amazingly smooth! If you can't get it to run well, it's your hardware/software/ineptitude at setting it up".

Some people find DCS VR fantastic. Others do not. That's why my advice is always try before you buy. I wish I had - I have an AU$1100 Reverb G2 sitting here gathering dust because of people claiming DCS VR is perfect.

I just picked this up. I realized it's still "EA" but, for $79.99 not a single tutorial mission or YT vid for firing a Phoenix by HB? SMH. No ACLS either.

So... many thanks to the community for the wealth of necessary knowledge to make any use of this aircraft at all. Without their hard work, many folks would be limited to following waypoints guns and landing.

Check out the Hornet then. About 80% of its avionics aren't explained in the tutes.

  7. I'm not a big fan of DCS VR in the fast jets due to the performance issues. However, I was wondering whether there is much of a difference in the perception of reprojection effects when flying choppers? Are they less noticeable because you're flying low and slow, and much less likely to get into close range with fast-travelling adversaries, as seen during the merge? I find the blurring/ghosting in these moments really puts me off VR, but I'm hoping that won't be the case with the Apache.

Anyone here got experience in VR with choppers vs fast-movers?

Well I bit the bullet. Got the Headset. The clarity is great. But the stutters and the jitter....oh boy. Can someone enlighten me though with the setup? I'm following this guide and I can't get the screens Speed of Heat has, and as a result Im unsure what exactly needs to be running and how to set it up. (Outside of DCS World that is)

Either the guide needs an update, or I need my eyes checked.

So am I right in that I need to have installed in the following order. WMR > WMR for Steam > SteamVR > Add DCS.exe to Steam library and VR

How do I setup WMR for Steam? As soon as I run it it goes into some VR mode and for the life of me I can't get it to display and options screen. Likewise my Steam VR screen looks nothing like it does in this guide.

Im getting 33ms frametimes, in native G2 res which is frankly unplayable.

You won't be able to run your G2 at native res if you want a lower frametime. Start at 60%, and work your way up.

So I typed this up from memory as a first crack at some kind of unified guide. It's totally possible I've missed some things, this is a rough draft. If anyone sees something wrong or that I missed let me know and I'll update it. Text in red are functions that are not implemented yet in DCS but I know and understand what they do.

There's a bunch of other stuff not in yet related to pages and features we don't have (and may never have in some cases). If I don't fully understand how the feature works, I didn't include it. The Az/El page will bring a few additional HOTAS functions for the radar and A/A FLIR, There are TDC Slew functions on the SA and HSI pages, a waypoint slew function for adjusting waypoints on the HSI, and a MAP Slew function on the HSI that has something to do with map alignment.

I had a realization last night that an illustrated quick-reference guide might be easier to make on a per-page basis rather than a per-switch basis like is typically done with the Hog and Viper. I'll try to draw up something like that.

You sir, are a freaking legend. Thank you!

Wonder why sounds like a bad config or something?

Ah, the old "something is wrong with your PC" chestnut. This leads to so many people wasting days on "tweaking" their systems when nothing is wrong with them. I personally have worked in the PC building and overclocking industry for about two decades, and my existing PC is in the top 0.1% of all VR systems on the planet, according to a variety of online-validated benchmarks. It's actually not that hard to build and maintain a PC these days - the issue isn't that people have screwed up systems, it's that the experience of VR is extremely subjective. What looks perfect to one simmer may look terrible to another.

Also, chasing FPS in VR I have found to be pointless as therr is no comparison with pancake mode. Fewer FPS don’t seem to matter as much as it does not feel as jerky visually or unsmooth. For 95% of the time, I have a completely fluid experience.

FPS numbers do matter - because it's the only objective way of measuring the experience. Again, for some people 45fps or lower feels like "a completely fluid" experience. For me it feels like a stuttering mess.

I'm not saying your opinion doesn't matter, and that you're wrong to enjoy VR. I'm just saying that folks need to be aware that the VR experience is extremely personal, and to be wary of spending money or time chasing an experience that they may never find.

  11. Hey folks, I've got the TM Hornet grip with a Virpil base, and can't seem to find an illustration showing which buttons need to be mapped - there are a few floating around, but they seem to miss things like (what I assume to be) the radar elevation wheel.

Can someone please point me to a diagram showing me what buttons I need to map to my Hornet grip, as well as what should go on the Virpil throttle I have? Chuck's guide uses a different stick to the official Hornet grip, so I'm looking for what is the most realistic mapping.

  12. Very cool, but I like do like the fact that DCS UFC is plug and play, and also has higher quality visuals to represent each button. Can I ask what skill level you need to use this app, in both coding and image editing? How long did it take you to whip up that example? Finally, reckon there will ever be the option to output radar or RWR displays - that's one feature DCS UFC is missing which I'd kill for.

  13. Any update on whether or when we'll be able to swap seats online? I play mostly with a squadron doing an online Liberation campaign, and the lack of this functionality effectively cripples me as we don't have enough RIOs to go around. I admire the work that Jester can do, but it'd be much better if I was able to take over the Radar for long-range BVR. Unfortunately I'm now switching to the Hornet to get around this issue, but it's killing me as the Tomcat is by far my favourite jet in the sim.

This app looks exactly what I am looking for. I have a couple of questions :

-is IOS support planned? I don’t have android tablet.

-Are warbirds going to be supported in the future? Sometimes is nice to arrange important switches so we don’t have to bend our neck and fight with the mouse.

    Ty

I specifically purchased two Lenovo e10 and one e7 tablets for this app - work perfectly! Great digital panels for my Tomcat. Now if only we had radars/RWRs it'd be perfect!

No they didn't. The F-14 only had full flaps or maneuver flaps, nothing inbetween. IRL the flaps handle couldn't be used for anything other than up or full flaps.

I currently have flaps bound to a slider axis on my Virpil throttle - will setting this to, say, 40%, now deploy maneuvering level flaps? Or do they automatically deploy when used for maneuvering?

Cycling the hook at throttles idle was simply how it was done irl - kneeling had nothing to do with it, and you could still use it when kneeled. Hence the change.

Just so I'm clear on this - when I steer up to the shuttle, I then use the squat lever to drop into position. This usually disengages NWS. Are you saying we have to drop the tail hook now to disengage NWS? Or can I use my NWS button on the grip?

No, it's a SP campaign but it's good to know what RIO can do to know what to command and expect of Jester.

I suggest you refly the mission. I don't remember it being that long. You just missed the boats. Read the texts carefully to know their path to predict their position and do a search.

It's been a few months since I flew it so I don't know if it works perfectly as designed atm.

I followed the radio instructions perfectly. I watched a video online of someone else doing it, and they jumped into the RIO seat to get the TV camera to find the boat - I have nfi how to do so  😞
