  1. Got it yesterday, too, and been having a ton of fun. Especially the small details like animated machine gun belt and cetral panel shake. About your ka-50 comment, though. It's objectively easier to fly because of it's dual rotor construction and the fancy autopilot augmentations (don't even need to hold the stick unless you're immediately doing a maneuver). But it tries to kill if you if don't know how to use them correctly. Here's a little article that made me love it again: http://www.simhq.com/_air13/air_429a.html

I'm sorry if you already know that, but if I can help at least one more person with that tricky Kamov system, I'm happy.

Thanks for the link, it's very helpful. I've only dabbled with the KA50 so my knowledge goes from "yay I pulled a reversal, this isn't so bad" to "oh my god I just fell out of the sky by going straight".

It's not so much that it's hard to fly, rather sometimes things feel a little counter intuitive. You pull maneuvers that feel fatal easily and then a simple one kills you.

  2. Got it too from the steam sale. I wasn't convinced I'd like it but I'm having tons of fun.The FM is fantastic and it does feel easier than the KA50 as long as you're conservative with it. The one major thing about the Huey is of course the counter rotation when you take off. I find that you need to be very decisive with the rudder and have it move forward as quickly and as smoothly as possible to avoid messing with the rudder in a hover too much.

The black shark is a ballerina compared. You can pull some amazing maneuvers and float like a butterfly but one mistake and it will punish you in 10 different ways at once. The Huey feels like it's out to get you from the very beginning so you start with the right mindset in order to not crash :)

  3. Maybe it's a placebo effect but I noticed that landings feel much much more "organic" i.e. the gear suspension makes the plane wobble left-right if you break too much. Before it seemed to me like the only effect was the tire screech and tire marks.

Best way to explain it is that it looks like the wobbly takeoff/landing gear behavior in the Mig21 trailers.

  4. M3s sound like M3s now both inside and outside and they are loud when the engine is idle and get drowned out when you are at full throttle.

Before they sounded like M2s from the outside and like some weird gatling from the inside.

Also, it could be me but it seems that the sounds of the engine and air resistance are much better now.

All in all excellent work Belsimtelk

  5. If there is ever a Korean war scenario (which I really hope we see), then Mig15s should not have G-suits. On the other hand they should have the Sirena systems that gave an audio warning when a Sabre Radar was locking onto the Mig.

Let's stick to what planes actually had instead of artificially diluting the matchup. The planes were pretty balanced despite having very different design philosophies and on-board equipment. This is what makes the F86 Vs Mig15 one of the best matchups in the history of air combat in my opinion. It's the 109 vs Spit in the jet age.

  6. Yes, there is an auto updater. It only checks once a day for new versions, but you can manually force it to check for new updates any time by calling:

There are also full installers: Large files that - depending on your internet connection speed - could take long to download, but are useful when you run into problems.

Thanks I moved to the standalone client from steam not so long ago so I was pretty ignorant of the procedure.

  7. Hello there "FivebyFive". Of course I have no problems with what you want to release. It appears we both arrived at the shark mouthed 51st skins together.

I had little problem with the mouth as I had just done "Beauteous Butch II" prior to it so had learned the layout. It was the stripe sections that caused me to nearly lose the plot!!!

With regards to the spec layer? You essentially create your own for each skin and then guide the game to it all through the .lua (Description file),but then you probably know all this from your WarThunder skins? My experience was in "IL2:46" and there was no spec layer so this has been a learning experience for me.

Here's a link to the forum article that I used to learn the procedure. VERY useful. http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=88855 the tutorial is the 4th entry down.

The "model viewer" is another invaluable tool if you haven't already discovered it. I think its an absolutely brilliant piece of kit.

When you refer to my "Template" I assume you mean the skins I have uploaded? I haven't released a template as yet. I'm waiting on the official one to arrive.

Feel free to use my skin as a guide for the tail checks. As you will see there is a "dead zone" that separates the rudder from the tail so the checks need to be tailored to it.

Not sure which I'm doing next. I have had a couple of requests which I'm considering at the moment.

Feel free to PM me for any help/info.

    Bo

The specmap in warthunder was really simple. There was a "skin_C" PDS file with the actual skin and a "skin_N" PDS with the specmap. You exported both as BMPs in the same folder and that was it. The shark mouth was also easier to do with the WT template as it was all-in-one but the stripes, those were even worse than in DCS with lots of little bits here and there that made little sense until you made a guide layer blindly at first.

As for the template, I remember downloading something named "generic F86" I think. It was by you. And yes, I would never venture to make another skin without the model viewer :)

Thanks for the tutorial link btw.I'll be sure to read up.

And by the way, I still haven't flown the F86 online. If you guys have some "Korea server" or something where you hang out let me know.

    cheers

  8. Hello,

Great repaints guys, I would like to know if this repaint is available to download ?

A great thanks in advance, Skull.

    PNlMPMt.jpg

Skull I could port this one next but I need to find out how to make the skin shiny in DCS. I made this in warthunder back in the day and it used a different system for specular. It had two separate files in the same folder but I can't find something like this here.

Anyone with more experience who could give me a few tips? I'd be eternally grateful.

  9. Okay I'm back. I've been a little preoccupied with my latest release "HELL-ER BUST X".

I thought the biggest challenge would be to get the shark? Tiger? mouth to align. Boy was I wrong! That was relatively simple! Getting the stripes to align over the canopy frame? Now that was an absolute b*****d!

NMF has been tinkered with again and I have to say I think it looks relatively okay now, but I am not going to say I'm leaving it at that because we all now I can't back that up!

Anyway it is going to be up before tomorrow at http://www.lockonfiles.com and DCS used files. I am also hoping to re-upload my previous release with the new NMF before Monday.

I also would like to welcome "FiveByFive" who is submitting some nice stuff......even if he did beat me to the Shark? Tiger mouth!!! (Which is it by the way, anyone know....I want to say Tiger).

Really fantastic skin and my alltime Sabre livery, although I'll probably have to scrap my own WIP now :)

I was working on porting the old Warthunder decals as a follow up to "Father Dan" since the shark mouth and stripes were figured out on the new DCS template (I used your excellent template BTW).

Strangely enough. I found the shark mouth alignment to be way worse than the stripes. Getting the perspective of the front part was living hell.

By the way, is there a way to alter the specmap?Maybe I could salvage my skin by doing the modern chromed version but I can't find the file that controls shinyness in DCS. It was a separate one in warthunder. As long as you're ok with it.

So if you don't mind I'll do the chromed version like this:

    20120304%20D-M_1117%20F-86E%20NX1F%20Hell%20er%20Bust%20left%20rear%20landing%20m.jpg

I just need to find where the specmap is stored and I can release it fairly easily if I can make it look like this

  10. Wow,excellent Fivebyfive, another 51st FW F-86f,and very welcome IMO,along with Bo's skins theyre all going to look great together, thanks for sharing buddy

Hey Basco1, I tried to reply to your message a couple of times but I'm getting an error. You are right about the little details and I should have a re-upload in a matter of hours, cheers.

    P.S

I have found two versions of the plane. One has the pilot's name instead of a decal on the canopy strut. any info of its authenticity?

    f86e_fatherdan-3.jpg

Also, I have some other skins that I could port fairly easily over the weekend but they come from the F86-A5 model. Not the most historical to stick them on an F30 but the livelier skins seem to come from the earlier-mid phases of the conflict when it was all "A5"s and "E"s.

    sUXp066.jpg

Although I can't do the "coat of grey paint", "polished chrome" effects in DCS F86 since I don't know how specmaps work here (it was a separate file in warthunder).

  11. Not stupid, see what it says on the download 5x5, if its freeware then you probably can but generally anything that is released as a template is available for everyone to use. What you are looking for is this:

License: Freeware - Free version, Unlimited distribution

A good rule of thumb is if in doubt pm the owner and ask him/her for permission to use their work, most folks on here are great about that.

Anything I put out is free to do with what you will

Thanks for the info crazyeddie. Just trying to get my bearings. I've only recently returned to simming after a long hiatus (circa 2003) and it'd be a shame to leave the old skins I did in warthunder to rot. Being able to use a template for now will help a lot to port them speedily.

Quick WIP as I try to figure out the area around the canopy struts.

  12. Hello, I'm pretty new here. I bought the F86 a while ago and have been fiddling with the skins in my spare time.

I'd like to ask the more knowledgeable about etiquette when it comes to using templates. I understand that there are no official ones, just player made ones. Is it ok to use and modify those if we credit the creator or should I wait for an official release?

Also, I can't seem to find how to change the specmaps in DDS. I made a couple of skins for fun in warthunder and there you used two separate files.

Anyway,I'd like to firstly port over the warthunder skins (something easily done by using my old layers and changing them as needed).

These are the skins I'm interested in porting over first. I've pretty much ported them over in DCS but I'd like to sort the aforementioned issues first before I finalize and release them with player-made templates.
