Well Step 2 worked fine (after I had to recall my user name and password).
Now what do I do? I run a lot of mods and things. So now what do i do? start putting things from my old saved games into the new saved games folder one folder at a time until I find the problem file? For example, I have a number of liveries that change Russian cockpit labels to English, etc. I also run Helios in the scripts folder.
I notice that the old DCS.openbeta folder is now just DCS. Is that correct? I think yes because of the now combined regular and open beta.

I did a slow repair and two reinstalls and now it is working. I have no idea what broke.

Yes. It turns out I had both a key command and an axis command for the it. I got rid of the axis command and now it is fine.

This was the answer. I can now trim (sort of) and the cyclic is dead centered at the start. I guess the "control helper" is sort of like a guide as to where your cyclic should be but it really through me off.
