  1. Anyone that says the Hornet/Super Hornet would have outperformed the planned future Tomcat needs to pull their head out of their ass.

The future for the F-14 looked more like an F-22 with swing wings that the F-14 we know. It simply would have been better in every single regard. Range, weapons, speed, maneuverability, and yes stealth. The Super Hornet is a dog.

  2. Not siding with anyone in particular - but there seems to be a general view that anyone who is a pilot for the military is somehow the epitome of aviation excellence.

Trust me, I have known some complete muppets wearing pilots wings. Some simple examples like taking off in your MB339 and smashing it out towards the bombing range..and then coming over the radio saying he had possible engine problems and not being able to gain airspeed at max throttle...yeah, leaving the gear down will do that.

Or like one interesting flight I was on, as we descended at 250kts through 200' at 2000 ft/min directly at the ocean during a night descent in a P-3, only saved by the co-pilot taking over and pulling up at 120'...3.6 secs before impact. (200' was our not-below).

Yes there are some supreme pilots in the military - but there are also some not-so-greats..

120 feet above the deck at a 2000ft/min descent is .06 seconds before impact and I call bullshit.

  3. What for ?

Isn't it obvious with so much info available through the web nowadays ?

For much I appraise the F-14A Tomcat (more than the F-16 for instance), one must acknowledge that the F-16 was created to excel at accelerating, climbing, turning, maneuvering, etc... from the drawing board.

I don't have any doubt the F-14A can hold its own in a dogfight, depending on the circumstances and opponents.

Neither I'm I part of the, "only an Interceptor" crowd.

But regarding BFM, dogfight, WVR, etc, trying to match it with, and say it's as capable as an F-16, F/A-18, MiG-29 in a pure machine vs machine comparison, doesn't make much sense to me.

Sure it can defeat any of those in a dogfight - it just takes a better pilot, but int therms of pure dogfight / meneuvering performance, it doesn't seem to be at the same level.

Stick to video games and let the Pros handle it, thanks... My Uncle (The F-14 Pilot) would beg to differ... Anyone underestimating a Tomcat is about to get one hell of a wake up call...

  4. I got excited, I had an email saying this was happening. Then nothing on the channel. I can't even watch old videos. Considering it's not 1300z on Saturday yet I suppose someone jumped the gun.

  5. targeting pod is more important than new weapons. becasue we need to find the target first

It's simple with a drone above giving you the targets lat and long. You put that in as a waypoint, designate that waypoint as a target, the system puts a diamond right over the target for you.

If there is no drone, it's much more difficult.

  6. I didn't see it, but has anyone mentioned that the seat should be safe until you are on the runway threshold, not armed as soon as you get in the jet.

Its step 1 in Start up Procedures, arming the seat. Step 1 should be making sure it's safed.

  7. GPS???

SOme MP servers have the freqs in the briefing, as well as the Carrier courses on each leg, take note of them before you get in the jet. Literally write them down on a piece of paper if you have to. You can also enter waypoints into the system and fly to them.[/QUOTE]

Are you referring to entering GPS map co-ordinates?

There is a yet to be activated feature that allows you to mark waypoints as you fly.

Really? Cuz I've been doing it now for a while... You can enter them before taking off, but you can also enter new ones while you're flying.
