  1. Depends on your budget, but if you're gonna VR get a gen 2 headset at the very least, Rift S, Reverb, Index, Cosmos with the Reverb offering the best resolution and clarity. With all of them you should be able to read HUD, instruments and still see a fair distance.

Of course it's not gonna beat 4K - it's more like 1080p up close and 730p for distance stuff. But man, nothing beats the immersion factor and wait until you sit in the cockpit of the F-16 with that canopy.

  2. While the visual quality is great, I'm not convinced it's worth $600 yet.

For the price point, in comparison to other VR headsets it's definitely the best for simmers. You won't get this clarity for the price with only the Pimax 8K being better... but Google the price for that.

All other mainstream headsets are more expensive, with the exception of the Rift S, for lower resolution.

Regarding dead pixels, definitely RMA it.

  3. Oops, you're correct, so I've corrected my post. I've read mostly negative feedback though regarding the Reverb - small sweet spot, bad mura and other issues - which is why I didn't go for this product. I'd love to hear your thoughts though, as I'd kill to have a super high-res HMD. This review in particular guided my decision, as the Road To VR guys know their HMDs well: https://www.roadtovr.com/hp-reverb-review-vr-headset/

It rocks. Just google youtube reviews about the Reverb. For sit down simmers it can't be beat but is meh as a room scale VR experience, which is my experience too, mainly due to the mediocre controllers.

In fact that site you linked also has a Cosmos review - https://www.roadtovr.com/htc-vive-cosmos-review/ and it seems that the Cosmos' sweet spot is probably smaller than the Reverb, with mura/aberrations/all problems inherent with VR headsets still present (and yes, they're present in the Reverb too).

But what that review does admit about the Reverb is clarity - There’s no doubt that Reverb’s displays are very sharp, and very pixel dense. It’s impossible to focus on a single pixel, and the screen door effect (unlit spaces between pixels) is on the verge of being difficult to see. It has the best resolving power of any headset in its class, which means textures, edges, and text are especially crisp.

Which is all that matters to sit down simmers. Here's some more reviews from a simmer's pov -

    - Cmdr Exigeous for ED.

    - AussieStig for car simming.

    and
Mixed Reality TV, not really simming but he does do a DCS review, jsut skip to the conclusion.

    - simmer compares to Rift S.

The Reverb does have downsides but visual clarity ain't one of them. It's $300 less than the Cosmos, $350AUD more than the Rift S and likely $1kAUD less than the Index. That price point is a major selling point for the clarity and type of gaming we do. If I was room VR'ing then I'd probably go for the Index or even Rift S.

  4. FWIW, I use the default (unchecked) IPD value and am perfectly happy in all cockpits!

Me too. The stick is right size, F-16 MFD is the right size at 4 inches, my shoulders feel like they're gonna touch the side bars, everything looks like it should from what I've seen on youtube.

  5. Hi

Would a 2070 super run the reverb? Perhaps turn some sliders down?

Or a standard 2080? The 2080ti is really above my budget....it's about 1200 Euro here...

I'm interested more in clarity than in high shadows and a lot of trees...

    Thanks

I run mine with a 2070 super. You'll be fine with that.

Off the top of my head terrain was set to low, textures high, shadows low, ground shadows flat, trees 75%, preload 10k, 1024 cockpit, visibility high, steamvr ss 188%, pd 1.0. I really should play around with reducing steamvr ss but I'm happy with these settings.

  6. And don't believe the negativity about tracking in the Reverb. Mine has not lost tracking at all, even when checking six or looking down behind at my arse flicking the test switches in the F-16.

That canopy though in the Reverb..... do me a favour and come write about your experience when you first sit down in the F-16 in the Reverb with that canopy.

  7. I went from CV1 to Reverb. You won't regret it. The experience I got in the cockpit first time in the Reverb was the same WOW factor of trying on VR for the first time with the DK2. SDE is still there but hardly noticeable at all. I can read all dials, everything on the HUD and see ground targets at angels 20.

Get some money back by offloading the CV1 - so the difference between what I made back and buying the Reverb is more than worth it for the resolution.

However it does come with some caveats - the monstrous stiff cable and mediocre controllers. But as a simmer only the cable presents a nuisance as I don't use the controllers at all.

As a general room VR experience you're better off with the Rift S or Index but for sit down simmers nothing beats the Reverb.

  8. Adding to what's been said before. It's a good foundation to continue (hard and speedy) work on, but it's extremely barebone which is asking quite a lot considering the ea asking price.

I'm having doubts about the flight model, at halv tanks full and no external stores I cannot maintain 9g sustained turns.. At what speeds should this be possible? Also, what is the recommended minimum speed in wvr scenarios?

Pre-order EA price was cheaper than EA/retail. Either pay to fly it now as is or pay later to fly with more systems implemented. Either way you and I will be flying the exact same jet only difference is if you pre-ordered you got it for cheaper.

  9. I'd rather fly it now as a shell in VR than wait another 6 months.

I really don't get the whining about it being released as is, it could be on rails as a guided tour type concept and I still would rather that experience with VR than wait months. If you want to wait for more complete features then fine, wait. It's labelled as EA, people went in with eyes wide open as ti what it is.

  10. My use will only ever be for DCS or Xplane 11 is the tracking ok on the reverb for DCS?

Have read its not as good as the rift s.

It won't be as good as the Rift S. However that doesn't mean that it's not good already. I have the Reverb and for my sim gaming it's never lost track, even when checking six. I don't room game so couldn't speak of its tracking for Beatsaber but you can google/youtube that.

If simming is the only thing you're gonna use it for then you'll be fine. Besides, nothing beats the res of the Reverb.

  11. Haven't seen it yet but read lots about it, hard not to, but trying to not read too many spoilers about it. I mean the plot is pretty basic it seems from the trailers. I think with Superman movies you're there to see the spectacle and Superman actually using his powers.

The only things I'm worried about is that some have said that this isn't really in the spirit of Superman - Superman stands for all that's good in humanity and that he should be trying to save preserve life wherever possible but not the case in this movie.

Also if they start with Zod, WTH are they gonna do with sequels to top Zod as a nemesis? This is why I liked the original Superman series.
