ddreg Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Hello, I'm interested in getting this game. I see that it requires activiation. Will this game only work for 1 computer after activation? If I decide to completely upgrade my system to a whole new computer, will I be able to use the game on the new system? Also whats the difference between regular Lock On and Lock On Gold? If I buy the regular Lock On (like 1/2 price) and buy Flaming Cliffs will it be the same as if I buy Lock On Gold or will I be missing something? I intend to purchase Lock On (don't know which one) and Flaming Cliffs from GoGamer. And why is Flaming Cliffs called unofficial? Should I wait for an official version?

I intend to purchase Lock On (don't know which one) and Flaming Cliffs from GoGamer. And why is Flaming Cliffs called unofficial? Should I wait for an official version? I will try to anwer your questions (folks, please correct if I am wrong): 1. You are only entitled to run the software at one computer at a time. The copy protection requires either online or manual (phone) activation. The number of activation keys is limited, I think presently to -5- activations. So, theoretically, you can install on one computer, activate there, install on another computer, activate there and most likely then Starforce denies Lock-on to be started at the first computer. It is intended as a copy protection. Specs say that after change of more than 40% of your hardware, a new activation becomes necessary. I tried myself and change of the HDD alone will require a new activation. 2. For a re-installation on the same computer, there is a tool available which saves your registry key (the registry entry for Lock-On), so you can re-install the game and re-install the registry key and you don't need an activation then. 3. I'm not sure about the regular Lock-On and Lock-On Gold, but as far as I know the regular Lock-On is version 1.01, while the Gold Edition is 1.02. 4. Either way, you can use both versions as a start. Flaming Cliffs is an add-on to Lock-On, so a Lock-On installation is required in order to upgrade to Flaming Cliffs (also referred to as version 1.1 of Lock-On). Flaming Cliffs is available as CD or download version (I have the DL) and there are two patches for it available, both free of charge: 1.11 and 1.12. Be carefull which version you choose, both patches come for the DL and the CD version of Flaming Cliffs. 5. Flaming Cliffs is called an unofficial add-on because UBISOFT still owns the copyright for the game and has not developed nor distributed Flaming Cliffs. kind regards, Raven.... peterj Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 The starforce protection does not prevent you from running the game on multiple computers (albeit the EULA probably does), that's why there are a limited number of activations. I think the last bid is 15 activations. The CD version does not need any activation, the protection is reinforced with occational CD-checks. Original LOMAC + FC will get you the same as Lock On Gold (which does include Flaming Cliffs). That's it, welcome to the boards :)

I just noticed from the front page that it does not need to be activated if I buy the CD which is how i plan to get it. So I won't need to worry about installing to a new computer when the time comes or doing the registry back up thing. How does this starforce protection work? So its a program that gets installed on the computer to make sure you don't copy the CD? Does it disable the CDR drive? Is that like Sony's root kit program? I see a list of drives not compatitle with it. Mine is an LG so i guess it should be OK. Original LOMAC + FC will get you the same as Lock On Gold (which does include Flaming Cliffs). That's it, welcome to the boards :) Lock On Gold includes Flaming Cliffs? I check the description on gogamer didn't notice it mention flaming cliffs in the description or the Su-25T as a flyable plane. Is there a way to verify that? I'd hate to spend more money on the Gold version and then end up having to buy FC later on. If its true it would be more convient to buy just one box. One more thing: is FC an upgrade to LOMAC so that they run together as one program or will they be two separate programs? (I ask this because I saw a post asking if there were any complications about having both install on the same computer. didn't finish reading the entire post tho.) Thanks.

My CDR drive still functions after the installation of Flaming Cliffs, so you need not worry about that. I'm still burning CDs and DVDs like there was no tomorrow :) Flaming Cliffs is included together with the original Lock On game in the Gold package. This has been verified from various safe sources, including ED (the developers of the sim and the add-on). Flaming Cliffs is a separate program (in that it is listed separately in the Add or Remove Programs window of the Control Panel), but it cannot run without you already having Lock On installed. Thus, the two MUST be installed on the same drive. I hope you do get hold of a copy of the game (and the add-on), as it would be a darn shame if you didn't :) If you love flight simulators as much as the rest of the people/maniacs (choose your noun) in this forum, then you will really love Lock On. I was a bit slow in getting my copy of Flaming Cliffs (bought it about a month ago), and I'm still hitting myself on the forehead for not getting it sooner :) Happy flying!
