McBlemmen Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Hello. So , i just died in a SU33 campaign mission by getting hit by my own bomb in mid air. I think it's time i stop derping around and do some research on how to do actual ground attack x) Is there a way to lase a target , or atleast move the bomb aiming reticule so you dont have to ... how do i say it ... "guess" on when to start holding down the trigger (thats what i do now anyway when trying to stay somewhat level and drop bombs). or is the best way to bomb to dive bomb so you have that instant weapon release? Also , in the controls i have "weapon fire" (my trigger) and "weapon release" "the fire button on my stick) but weapon release doesnt seem to do anything, what's it used for? Thanks :) PS : I realise the SU33 may not have been intended for ground attack... but i really need my carrier based CAS fix.
Exorcet Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 (edited) It's been a long while since I've used bombs on the Russian fighters. The controls question I can answer though, while all FC3 planes have those button options, only the US aircraft use both. Weapon release is ignored on Russian planes. With US planes Weapon Fire is reserved for guns, Weapon Release is for all other weapons. Getting hit by your own bomb implies you were pulling 0 or negative g. Don't pitch down while dropping bombs, if anything pull up very slightly to make sure the bomb clears your plane. There are two general bomb modes, CCIP (IP = Impact Point) and CCRP (RP = Release Point). CCIP requires you to place the pipper on the target. CCRP lets you drop bombs on something you can't see in the HUD (or even through the canopy at all). I'm assuming you're using CCIP, which is more accurate but requires more careful flying to use. If you use CCRP you'll be able to bomb while flying level (but at the cost of accuracy). I'm pretty sure the Russian fighters have CCRP, but I don't remember how to activate it. I'm not sure what you mean with the part where you need to guess when to hold the trigger. Do you mean launch authorization? You can override this if you want (L-alt+W [?]), but if you look to the left of the HUD you should see a range scale that tells you when LA is approaching. McBlemmen Posted March 10, 2014 Author Posted March 10, 2014 What i mean by the "guessing" (sorry i dont know how to say it otherwise) is that , if you're approaching to drop bombs in what i assume is CCRP mode (AKA not pitching down, or atleast not alot) you have to "select" your target from really far away , especially if you're flying at a somewhat high altitude, from that distance its almost impossible to see ground targets. Example : i'm coming in from the sea , and my target is on a beach. I'm flying at lets say 5km altitude level flight. My "gun sight" for the bomb will be over my target area (the beach) when im still multiple kilometers out at sea , making it almost impossible to actually see a target from that far. But if you want to keep flying level i assume this is the way it has to be. Old russian tech i guess :P So it's pretty much a guessing game on acurately trying to target something. Either that or the airplan wasnt designed to bomb like this but instead bomb at a steep angle. Your post about CCRP and CCIP made me remember something i read on the SU25t forum , about the russian planes switching between CCRP and CCIP automatically , wich i assume is the case here too. Thanks! PS : I cant wait for the hornet <3 my hype for that plane is the only reason i'm flying to SU33 to begin with lols
Exorcet Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Now I understand. Given how the CCRP works in the Su-33 it's probably better saved for large targets (large buildings, runways, etc). Alternate solutions could include having another plane mark the target for you with smoke, which might make it visible further out. Or you can wait until you're close enough to see, dive down, mark the target, and pull up to release bombs. This should still let you release bombs higher than if you're using CCIP. You may even be able to toss bomb (launch the bombs up into the air) to boost their range. I'm looking forward to the Hornet too, will be a lot of fun. If you don't have the A-10C, maybe consider it when it's next on sale as the F/A-18 will probably be similar to it in some air to ground modes. McBlemmen Posted March 10, 2014 Author Posted March 10, 2014 Yes i know i can dive down a little to mark a target and then pull up again , it just seemed a bit clunky and i was wondering if there's a better way to do it. Guess not , no problem. 1 have the A-10 , and i enjoy it alot ,(if was my first module) but i just really love carriers too wich is why i think i'll enjoy the hornet more :) Im not a pilot IRL nor am i a military specialist , but as far as i can tell the hornet will play alot like the A10. But with carriers. And afterburners. <3 1
hvymtal Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 (edited) The center dot is pretty much exactly where the bomb will hit when flying straight and level. You have to drop it almost on top of a tank to deal any damage, but most other vehicles close hit are acceptable depending on the bomb. FAB-500s you should be able to do well with, just stay flying the same course as when you held down the trigger and the bomb will land very accurately. You don't have to be ten feet off the ground, leave that crap for crazy A-10 pilots with Mk82 AIRs. I don't understand RBKs really at all, I've had lots of hit-or-miss experiences with them. KMGUs you need to aim in front of the target by a good margin if its just one unit. BetABs are for hardened targets and runways only. Any further questions?
