Tracer1 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Hey Guys, Sorry if this has been posted before, I did search but could find nothing on it. Its interesting, the restriction on comms in the P51. So if I was to fly to an alternate airfield and want to land there, can I ask how it done in DCS? In real life I would use the radio if its uncontrolled then broadcast to traffic my intentions. Fly over the runway looking for a windsock to determine active runway then join the traffic pattern accordingly. But I don't think windsocks are modeled in this sim yet or not sure if they ever will be. I'm just curious what other serious sim P51 drivers do in this case? How do you determine the active runway if you don't have comms for that airbase? Brand new on here but am enjoying the experience so far. The P51 is a very nice plane. The cockpit is very well done and is a joy to be in. Its a far cry from the old days back in the 1990's, things have come a long way. I missed out on supporting the new WWII world but will definitely be there when it is released, this sim has a lot of potential. I just hope they keep trying to make it better and better. Oh, and another question if I can. Last night I was flying home and my RWR went off, but nothing was behind me. I recycle it and it stays quiet for a short time then goes off again so I just turn it off. Is this feature not working like the others on the right side of the cockpit? Or is this a bug potentially? Thanks Tracer1
Tucano_uy Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Hi Tracer, About your first question... nothing to do about it. Try to determine the wind direction by observing the smoke from the factory chimneys. 2nd, if you refer to the device on the P51 that alerts you when there's another airplane at your six (don't have the manual handy and I can't recall it's name), be aware that it will ring if you're below 5000 feet approximately because it detects the terrain. Only turn it on when you are above that altitude.
mslechta Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Hello, You can contact tower but You have to preselect radio in mission manager (only for channels for four TWRs).
Zabuzard Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 (edited) The RWR is the rear warning radar AN/ APS-13 Monica. Search for that in this section to find detail info and coverages etc. Short: it simply rings when there is sth in your 4 to 8 oclock section. It trys to only ring when there is actually an aircraft but often it fails and detects ground, terrain, mountains or of course friendly aircrafts Edited April 11, 2014 by Zabuza
Tracer1 Posted April 13, 2014 Author Posted April 13, 2014 Hey Guys, Thanks for the comments. Will try the RWR at a higher alt next time. I did look at the smoke stacks but I don't think they are modelled to move with the wind. And contacting tower is hit or miss even with the right freq. I have been online a couple of times now and called tower but they don't replay back, so I just pick a runway and hope no one is coming in. I don't know what I can be doing wrong with the comms, I've tried changing the various comm mode switch settings. I wonder if it could be the plane I just into in an online session that is set to the wrong airport maybe? Is that possible? Thanks Tracer
Zabuzard Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 First of all the comm frequencies of the P-51D must be set manually in the editor. So if youre playing online at anothers server he actually must set this in the mission. Next you must be near the airfield and not at the other side of the map (obviously). Then the airfield must be set to the same side than you (blue or red and not neutral), this must be done in the mission editor too. Of course you must check if the radio is on (indicated by light) and set to the correct channel (which is assigned to the same frequency). Usually B is used for home base, A for in flight communication, C as alternate base or if flying from one to another base its the destination and D as emergency channel (in real). Normally if that all is checked the tower will reply if youre indicating a landing or so :)
Tracer1 Posted April 14, 2014 Author Posted April 14, 2014 Thanks for the help Zabuza, To test I went in to my own mission offline and it worked as you described and as in the manual. Good to know going forward. Being so new to the sim I'm still trying to figure out the keybindings : ) , too used to F4 Tracer
