I am super new to the whole flight sim scene. Flying aircraft in BF4 is frankly, a joke!

I decided to dive headfirst into DCS and bought a bunch of modules and a fancy new Saitek X-52 Pro. Being the responsible forum browser that I am, I used the search function extensively trying to locate a profile for my new purchases. After having little luck finding a current profile (after the .lua change) I tried using some google magic and again all I could find was pre 1.2.8 profiles.

I could really use some help with locating the current X-52 Pro profiles for the FC3, A-10C and the P-51D modules! I know I should learn how to program the profiles myself but I don't even know where to begin. I don't know what should be where and why. If I start with a profile that someone who knows the what's and why's at least I can focus on learning to fly these beasts.

Thanks in advance for you kind help and patience! :helpsmilie:

When I started, all the available profiles did not really help me. The available functions were too alien to me at this time to take any advantage of it. In fact the more elaborated profiles just confused me and tricked me into spending time learning and memorizing stuff that, well, was actually better spent in other areas: learning the aircraft and THEN to decide myself, what functions I need where on my HOTAS.

That's why I usually recommend to create your own profiles.

  • Start with the basic stuff and map yaw and pitch axis, throttle, rudder, etc.
  • Make sure that no conflicts exist (DCS has the bad habbit to auto-configure the same function for different controllers, i.e. you end up with a pitch axis on your throttle and on your stick - which makes flying "interesting")
  • Orient yourself at the functions the real HOTAS (s. manual!) has. If you don't really understand the purpose of some function, ignore it for the time being. Learn about it later (again: read the manual! :o) and when you know what it does and you understand why it makes sense to have it "at your fingertips" on the HOTAS, then map it accordingly.
  • That's it, basically. :o)

edit:

Oh, and configuring a profile as such is not hard. Easiest way is probably to go to Options -> Controls, select the appropriate "Layer" (the Aircraft). Select a category, perhaps start with "Axis Commands". Horizontally are the functions, vertically are your controllers. Click on a cell and click "Add" to add a button mapping for that function/controller combination or click "Axis Assign" in case of an analogue axis.

Thanks for the advice Flagrum, I do appreciate it.

The amount of information and depth of this sim is a bit overwhelming but that's why DCS seems like something I'd be interested in. My biggest obstacle right now is time! I'm concerned that by the time I've learned the ropes, everyone will have moved onto something else. In fact I think I'm quite late to the party now actually.

I guess I'll need to do some more reading...quickly.

Goslin,

I know what you mean by limited time. I do enjoy Dcs and the many modules. I have them all ( except the FCS series) and still honing my skills on the first module released: Ka 50.

I stick with it for personal satisfaction.

Since you have a new shiny X-52 pro and looking for things, might I interest you in this:http://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=94174

The good stuff is in the last two pages of the thread.

Enjoy.
