hitman Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 Some of you know recently I just sent my motherboard for warranty work, with problems accepting videocards. The tech support told me that my video card (geforce fx 5200 pro known to be good) is 3.0 volts and the motherboard only supports 1.5 volts...WTF is this? Its a 4x-8x 754 pin motherboard and the card is 4x-8x compatible. Someone clue me in here? I want to get back to my flight simming. BTW I know I need another video card and its in the budget for the next few weeks.
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 there is different standards of agp slots, some have 1.5 and other 3v. one of the standards is ghey and will not accept agp cards properly, if i recall, it was called something like super agp or some shit like that. thats all there is to it. alot of people got caught out like you....
hitman Posted March 16, 2006 Author Posted March 16, 2006 So wtf am I supposed to be lookin for? Its a KM800M Gigabyte motherboard for amd. What video card will i need for that?
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 i dunno, have you still got the motherboard manual ? if so, look at see what it calls the agp slot, if it just calls it agp then i presume you be ok, but if it calls it something like super agp, i am not sure if super is the word, but its something like that, then you will have to find a vid card that supprts that. same problem happened to a buddy of mine with a ati 9600, it worked perfect with everyones mobos we tested it in, then sent it to a dude, he said it never worked, we were like huh, he sent it back, we were expecting it to be dead, but it worked, 1 month later he finds out he has a different agp standard. tbh, i think the motherboard only accepts old videocards, i am not sure, but i would reckon a gf4 agp x4/8 would be the highest you could go... i will have a look and see what i can find... next time you buy a video card for it, make sure it agp 3.0 compliant, thats the main thing...
hitman Posted March 16, 2006 Author Posted March 16, 2006 I tried an agp mx4000 video card a few weeks ago brand new and it did the same thing...didnt recognize it at all..just locked up at the loading screen. I sent the board in for warranty and they told me they replaced the bios chip and reflashed it with the most stable bios version. The onboard video is a 64mb version and plays flanker just fine...Id rate it about as good as my old geforce mx420 card. Id hate to think that my new motherboard wouldnt support anything decent.
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 yea i hear ya, i did have a look and it says that it supports agp compliant 3.0 video cards, so thats what your gonna have to find, but 1.5 for a decent vid card isnt gonna be easy to find. I think with that board, they are expecting you to use the onboard, and use the agp slot as a backup, thats what i think. I would email them again and ask them what known video cards work in the board... if you do decide to buy another card, make sure it is 3.0 compliant, as thats the main thing... well thats what it says on the website... I hope it all works out for ya as i would be uber pissed that it couldnt accept a decent vid card. you maybe cheaper buying a new mobo rather than new video cards. this may give you some help in finding something you need http://www.directron.com/15agpguide.html basically, agp 3.0 = .8v ------= ur mobo can handle 3.0 only if the video card is 1.5 instead of .8v. agp 3.0 = agpx8 agp 2.0 = 1.5v -----= ur mobo can handle that. agp 2.0 = agpx4 weird as shite i know, but agp can be weird at times... if i was you, i would bin your mobo and get a mobo that someone you know or someone on these or other forums knows is capable of a decent card...
hitman Posted March 16, 2006 Author Posted March 16, 2006 It is a cheap motherboard...perhaps I should just find an nforce 3 instead.
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 to be honest with ya, gigabyte is shit, they have endless problems. I would go with a msi board or an asus or dfi. that be the only 3 boards i would choose from. for a cheap good board, i have an msi socket 754 neo v mobo. it is pretty cool, never gave me any problems and it did run a 6800gt no problems. it has overclocking options built into the bios, but its there own stuff, i didnt notice a clock lock for overclocking but maybe its done automatically when you start using there options. nice cheap and trouble free board, but its a via kt800 chipset, saying that, ive never ever had any problems with a via chipset, comparing that to my nf4 board, well lets just say ive had uber lots of problems with nf4 compared to my via chipset boards.
hitman Posted March 16, 2006 Author Posted March 16, 2006 nforce4 only deals with 939 pin chips doesnt it? or the intel equivalent?
Guest EVIL-SCOTSMAN Posted March 16, 2006 Posted March 16, 2006 yea. am on about problems with my 4400/4800 cpus which are on nf4, compared to my socket 754 via chipset. i aint had any problems with the via, and i got another via rig, socket A and not one single problem. move onto my nf4 board and it was painful to start with, but i seem to have her under control now, newer drivers helped alot, i used to use the nf4 ide driver and on the old driver package they were uber unreliable, but they seem to have sorted them out with driver 6.70
