Tumbleweed Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 So I got to thinking, as you do... I wonder if it's possible to create a war games type mod for those servers that don't allow actual combat? I'm thinking for not necessarily VA but places like VA where the flying is good but no weapons are allowed. The mod would allow the simulation of air to air dogfights available to any aircraft without having to fire an actual projectile or worry about having to spawn a new aircraft to start over when you're hit or having to watch hitting innocent flyers. So if you're flying with someone you're getting on with and you suddenly decide I know, I want to practice some fighting, you can just go ahead and do it without affecting other people's flights. A sim within a sim I guess. Would others find something like that useful? Is it even possible to fool DCS into firing non-existent missiles and registering hypothetical hits? For me THE single most annoying thing about learning combat is the having to go through the whole process of starting up a new aircraft, taking off, getting to the fight everytime you get killed.. When you suck like I do, you tend to spend more time doing that than anything else and it sorta gets a bit boring LOL Personally I can't stand labels - I can't stand any un-natural aid. It's a big immersion killer for me but I do feel something is needed to help us rookies that suck at combat. War games are realistic and fighters do train with simulated missiles and hits so it's close to real... Good idea or am I just plain crazy??? GGTharos Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 The mod would allow the simulation of air to air dogfights available to any aircraft without having to fire an actual projectile or worry about having to spawn a new aircraft to start over when you're hit or having to watch hitting innocent flyers. So if you're flying with someone you're getting on with and you suddenly decide I know, I want to practice some fighting, you can just go ahead and do it without affecting other people's flights. That's a pretty poor attitude to training and flying. Would others find something like that useful? Is it even possible to fool DCS into firing non-existent missiles and registering hypothetical hits? No, and no, and I'll qualify it like this: While training with 'instruments' is neat, it is simply not necessary in the game. Set immortal and unlimited ammo and you have an instant combat environment. Squadrons who do 'proper' training don't do it ad-hoc like you're suggesting. They do it very deliberately, everything is briefed ahead of time and debriefed after. For me THE single most annoying thing about learning combat is the having to go through the whole process of starting up a new aircraft, taking off, getting to the fight everytime you get killed.. When you suck like I do, you tend to spend more time doing that than anything else and it sorta gets a bit boring LOL Immortal + Unlimited weapons, and/or quick-starts (ie. airstarts). ostheim Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 That's a pretty poor attitude to training and flying. I'm wondering how so? I think its a neat idea if you don't want to use projectiles? So in other words real pilots have poor attitudes towards flying? lol.
GGTharos Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 In other words, So if you're flying with someone you're getting on with and you suddenly decide I know, I want to practice some fighting, you can just go ahead and do it without affecting other people's flights. is a poor attitude to flying. The poor attitude is as follows: - Relying on technology instead of your own situational awareness to prevent affecting other people's flights - Relying on technology instead of flying to a safe area to prevent affecting other people's flights - Claiming that 'suddenly deciding to practice some fighting' is a form of training (ok, it is. Usually a bad one) All of that can be dealt with by running your own server with your own rules, or by negotiating with the server host what the rules are, establishing 'safe combat areas', and actually thinking before you act. That's what good/safe flying attitude is about. Of course, it's a game. Play however you like, but again - host your own server if you don't like rules on other people's server :) I'm wondering how so? I think its a neat idea if you don't want to use projectiles? So in other words real pilots have poor attitudes towards flying? lol. Wrecking Crew Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Eh, Tumbleweed, Make a mission with Red and Blue *Client* aircraft that start at their own bases. Add a support vehicle group at the bases that have a truck or three and some armor and a splash of air defense -- and be sure to set the bases to the appropriate coalition. Load the a/c with TRAINING weapons. Restrict each airbase warehouse to TRAINING weapons only. Viola'. (I have never loaded up training weps on any a/c, so I don't know what you will get out of this effort...) WC Visit the Hollo Pointe DCS World server -- an open server with a variety of COOP & H2H missions including Combined Arms. All released missions are available for free download, modification and public hosting, from my Wrecking Crew Projects site.
GGTharos Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 It won't really work on FC3 aircraft I believe, but it's certainly a nice suggestion. It also requires people to communicate about their kills/shots with training weapons which is er ... a lot to ask for.
