fitness88 Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 I was wondering if other modern sims like Microsoft Flight Simulator X for example get updated constantly like the F-15c and the other DCS modules? I seem to recall sims like Jane's when they were around and Microsoft Flight Simulator X seemed to put out 1 maybe 2 'patches' and that was it. Thank you.
fitness88 Posted December 4, 2014 Author Posted December 4, 2014 Thanks pr1malr8ge for the explanation. I only flew Jane's F/A-18 and FC 1, 2 and 3. I've seen a couple of PC based sims on the internet but DCS seems to be right in there.
fitness88 Posted December 6, 2014 Author Posted December 6, 2014 Why does it seem that with each update, although there will be some fixes that go with them, there are also however some new issues with things that were never broken in the first place?
Agg Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 That's just the nature of the beast when it comes to software development, when you fix something it often breaks something else...
Flagrum Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 (edited) That's just the nature of the beast when it comes to software development, when you fix something it often breaks something else... This. And also: it is not "fix 2 bugs = introduce 1 new bug". DCS is evolving constantly, not only in regards to EDGE. So there is A LOT of stuff going on - and the more you work the more can potentially get broken. And as Agg said, it is just the way software development is. Maybe this could be made less visible ... if you hire 50 more devs and 100 more testers ... But given the complexity of this beast called DCS, I find what ED is accomplishing here, the ratio of new bugs vs. fixed bugs + new features, not too shabby. Edited December 6, 2014 by Flagrum
Dilbflo1 Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Concerning civil simulators, as already said FSX is quite old and no more developed, also if still there is a rich third-party activity for addons. Instead X-Plane is actively maintained. The version 10 is quite often updated with important features (for example recently they improved the Garmin GPS simulation).
Beagle One Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Forgot to mention there is the new sim Warthunder but its a hybrid sim/game rather then a sim.War thunder is an arcade game just like World of Tanks. A few simulation elements on top of an arcade do not make a game into a Simulation. But if you consider the genral advancement, some full blown hard core sims from the 90's must be considered arcade today. DiD EF-2000 and F-22 ADF come to mind.
fitness88 Posted December 6, 2014 Author Posted December 6, 2014 From the late 90's and into the 2000's, Jane's comes to mind as I was very active with F/A-18. In the end they dropped their entire sim program because they couldn't recover their costs.
