army198527 Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 The men who flew during this time period are being forgotten. I realize this when I was reading a book on the flying circus. My nephew looked at me and said were they clowns flying in war? And he's 14. It is sad. Also brings me to a second point, why is world war 2 more focused on than world war 1? I believe World War one is just as important, the book "the things they carried." Or "All quiet along the western front" are books being forgot about. Its sad. Just wanted to see your alls opinion.
NeilWillis Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 Rise of flight covers WW1, so I don't think for a second it is being forgotten or overlooked. I don't think the period would be a suitable subject for DCS World right now because of the very basic nature of the machines, and the lack of data regarding the majority of the aircraft. There are also no surviving pilots from the period to consult. It was of course pivotal in the development of dogfighting tactics, with many of the principles established then being equally valid today.
army198527 Posted December 27, 2014 Author Posted December 27, 2014 Well im not really talking about DCS, I have rise of flight, I am talking about the overall war in general. Many shows/documentaries media in general favors WW2 and yes the casualties were 3 to 4 times higher in ww2, but I believe ww1 to be just as important. When you think about it, since the Napoleonic wars, all of our conflicts have been one continuous war.
NeilWillis Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 I'd guess that there is simply far more footage available for more modern conflicts. This year there has been a lot of coverage of WW1 as it is 100 years since war was declared. But the air war hasn't had much attention at all. I agree, it deserves much more analysis and coverage.
Roadrunner Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 (edited) well, first of all, not a war is important, but history itself, so that people learn from errors of the past and hopefully dont repeat them. anyway, i think it is not that much known anymore, because i.e. WW2 is more published in the media, more movies, books, games and the like. why is that? i read an article some time back that stated the following: in WW2 the evil enemy was clear, it was a war fighting an (at that time) evil state, etc.... what was in WW1? there had been one assassin, and after that the governments came true to their "defense-packts" and stuff. it was no war to annihilate a religious group, or something else, and that is hard to use in a game or movie, as people tend to like to have an enemy, like to understand the reason for a fight and like to think alike. for flying, WW1 was indeed the start, we all know to fly an immelmann, even though some folks debated if it was possible with an Fokker E.III flown by immelmann, and the Dicta Boelke are more or less used the same way today as 100 years ago. but your right, it's sad, that history is forgotten or not taught anymore, although most of us will remember history lessons being boring at times :D so much to say about this topic.... so few time.... :( RR Edited December 27, 2014 by Roadrunner [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "There's nothing to be gained by second guessing yourself. siipperi Posted December 27, 2014 Posted December 27, 2014 (edited) I like aviation and all but knowing general history is much more important than this. Importance of these wars will lower, further in future we go, sure it's a bit sad but that's how it goes. + airplanes were pretty minor thing during ww1. Edit. One thing came to mind... Yanks Werent really part of ww1 so they aren't so interested in it, meanwhile in french it's still the great war that they speak of. Edited December 27, 2014 by siipperi
