Irrelevant in multiplayer?

Has any one had any luck with the -21 in multiplayer? Ive spent more than a month reaching a level of proficiency with the aircraft and after several hours spent in multiplayer yesterday on various servers I saw exactly 1 enemy (a helicopter) and was shot down about 3 million times, a few times from sams and the rest all from "beyond visual range" missiles. The SPO/RWR is unless since every type of emission seems to set it off and I never picked up an enemy aircraft on my radar much less locked it up. Any one have any suggestions or know of a decent place to get in some multiplayer action?

I guess the server most play PvP on is the 104th multiplayer server.

 

Unfortunately there are more modern airframes than the MiG-21 available as well, so you might have a hard time fighting against Su-27s, F-15 and all the other stuff that has way better avionics, missiles and flight performance.

 

Having no AWACS/GCI available (at least on that server) makes it even harder, as the MiG-21 heavily relies on that.

 

However, some of the pilots here have been able to get some relatively good results. As far as I can tell, the key factor is to stay low and fast, hiding between hills and other landscape obstacles if possible. Try to sneak up on enemies, which however requires good situational awareness.

 

With the weak radar and the even weaker RWR it is a key factor to keep your eyes out. Spotting enemy aircraft flying overhead is much easier than trying to find them with the radar.

I would suggest the same as xxJohnxx, read the post he linked to. Hadwell, ttaylor, and others have gotten really good at hunting modern fighters in the Mig 21. Also, watch their YouTube videos. You can learn a lot seeing how they fight. Remember, you will die a lot before it becomes "easy."

I successfully identified, locked, and fired on an enemy MiG-29 in multiplayer... and then I was shot down by his R-27 before my missile hit.

 

You will have better luck with rocket pods against light ground targets.

Mig-21 is great in MP if you can find a mission that's designed for that time period. We have a decent mission on the S77th server sometimes that has AWACS and no f15s or flankers. Hopefully once some other mig-21 era aircraft are released these missions will become more prevalent

I got my first kill yesterday. But you're right, it's very hard - mainly because you're dealing with BVR missiles and better avionics. Your best option to balance the odds is to fly low in the hills near an enemy base along a known route and pop up from time to time to see whether you can catch radar contacts. If anything locks you up (this will happen all the time) dive and get them to chase you into the hills (if they're dumb enough), then at least you're balancing the odds.
