Harle
What are those "slant range unit" and "external-base optical range-finder" that I come across every so often reading the manual for MiG-21bis? Where are they placed? How do they work? What do they look like?
finger
At first: Slant range unit. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Harle
I suppose this unit uses data from barometric altimeter. Therefore it requires some adjustment depending on the elevation of region of operation. Where could such correction be made I wonder? I see no rotaries near the altimeter gauge in the cockpit... finger
Altitude input is from DV-30 unit, which is connected to static pressure system and pitch angle(epsilon) input is from AGD-1. The DV-30 has el.correction unit ZDV-30,but I do not know, where is on BIS variant. On MF variant is located in cockpit. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
finger
Probably is located in forward avionics bay.Altitude correction was adjusted before flight by ground personel,or by pilot. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Harle
Probably is located in forward avionics bay.Altitude correction was adjusted before flight by ground personel,or by pilot. So it wasn't adjusted from inside the cockpit? What is this ZDV-30 unit?
finger
DV-30 and ZDV-30 do not belong to ASP set.DV-30 has only to provide baro- pressure for altitude computation unit which is a part of analog. computer. This unit(in ASP comp) has to convert physical pressure to electrical signal. ZDV-30 (potentiometr) can correct this signal. By this input we can fix a difference between baro-altitude of ground target and take-off airfield. This system is used only in GROUND mode. 1 [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
finger
At second. External-base optical range-finder or -vneschne-bazovoy optitcheskoy dalnomer-. When we have exactly set wingspan(on inner scale) and exactly framed target by rotation grip (MANUAL mode) we can read range on 400-2000 range scale. When a piper is off from some reason,we can read range on fix net. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Harle
Thanks, Finger! That makes it clear. By the way, what does the radar fixed beam mode actually do? Does it measure the distance to the target in ground attack mode? Or just feeds two distance values to "launch" and "breakoff" lights?
sissypilot
Well I guess there is no way to find out why this is "externaly" based? :)
finger
Well I guess there is no way to find out why this is "externaly" based? :) This is russian terminology-vneschnyi-external -vnutrennyi-internal So, it does not mean, that optical rangefinder is out of board of a/c. Or,you can try to ask somebody on russian forum for exactly explanation. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
