The Sabre was stood down as a front line fighter between 1962 and 1963 in NATO Europe, and replaced by the CF-104 Starfighter. Back at home in Canada, No.1 (Fighter) OTU was closed, but the Sabres soldiered on, now as lead-in fighter trainers for pilots who would go on to learn to fly the CF-104.

The Sabres remained at RCAF Station Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada, now attached to the new "Sabre Transition Unit" (STU).

Sabre 23314 as it appeared circa 1963. This aircraft now flies as "Hawk One", painted in Golden Hawks colours and based in Gatineau, Quebec, with the Vintage Wings museum.

Around the end of 1958 the RCAF updated the aircraft markings standard, removing the under wing nationality markings and adding "buzz numbers" of "RCAF" on the starboard wing, and the last three digits of the aircraft serial on the port side. Like the roundels on the upper surface of the wings, the new underside markings were canted so as to align with the mean sweep angle of the wing.

Includes RCAF pilot texture with STU patches.

NOTE: this livery works best when used with my "RCAF Grey" replacement cockpit textures, found here:

Thank you Joko417 for making the Golden Hawk skin available.

This is a very special skin for me.

In the early 60's my Dad was in the RCAF stationed at Centralia in Ontario.

I was 10 years old when I first saw the Golden Hawks in an airshow there.

One of them was doing some aerobatics in front of the reviewing stands, when the announcer directed us to look to our rear where 3 more came screaming from behind us, flying between the Quonset hut flight line buildings, with their wingtips at the level of the lower window frames (about 10ft).

Even after moving to the States in '62, it stayed etched in my mind, and as soon as I was old enough I joined the USAF and did a 6 year TOD with JUSMAG (Joint US Military Assistance Group) as an adviser, training Laotian, Cambodian military personal.

I've seen the T-Birds and BA's many times, but that airshow at Centraila RCAFB was/is special.

Now thanks to DCS and you I can bring it back in spades.

Thanks!!

Yeah, I think the last generation had a lot more fun at airshows than we do today ;)

Bad boys. This was the Mk.6 with the final paint scheme with the blue buzz numbers on the tails. Not sure where the pic was taken.
