Basically it was a stable flight platform that could handle the stress of jet propulsion engine for test purposes. While the airforce had jets at that point, they did not have anything capable of carrying that equipment to do actually in flight testing. So it was basically a donkey in the sense that it carried those propulsion systems for actual "in-flight" testing purposes. Same way that the B-29 was used to carry larger manned vehicles under the belly being tested like the X-1.

Know and use all the capabilities in your airplane. If you don't, sooner or later, some guy who does use them all will kick your ass.

The last one, under the wing, appears to be an early version of the AGM-28 Hound Dog (?).... fins removed for clearance, I would assume. Slight differences in the engine mount, though.
