G3 Posted June 21, 2006 Author Posted June 21, 2006 how did my suncom talon thread get turned into a vapourware bitch fight. speaking of home cockpits , have you guys seen this: edit: looks as though this was a picture of a model cockpit, and not a life size pit :(
G3 Posted September 13, 2006 Author Posted September 13, 2006 after months of waiting my sfs throttle finally arrived and i have been experimenting with its button programming and axis setup etc. i was unable to get it to come up as connected in game controllers until i plugged the sfs joystick into the throttle, i recall reading that somewhere. once i did that i created a custom joystick with 4 axis, aside from the gameport connection the throttle also plugs directly into the keyboard i/o port on the pc, the keyboard then plugs into the throttle, allowing it to work as a pass thru and provide the key mappings. there are many buttons and leds on the throttles base and at first a little overwhelming, but after studying the pdf manual on the cd i printed out the button layout and associated descriptions and then it was a peice of cake. basically there were red buttons with leds for: 1, throttle: axis single or dual input 2, erase: profile to erase an entire profile (four user selectable profiles) 3, program: to program a key command to a button 4, turbo: for rapid fire setup of buttons and then other leds to let you know what profile is active. it seems that the buttons etc can indeed be configured to mimic the pressing of multiple buttons simultaniously as i mapped the "mute audible warning" to a switch and we all know that key combo is rshift + n after calibrating the stick in game controllers i assigned the left and right throttle levers to the appropriate thrust mappings in game. the split throttle was interesting as the axis's's's' :) seemed slightly out of time, and one engine seemed to enter afterburner earlier thsn the other causing the plane to yaw. unless i can rectify this issue i can see me just leaving the 2 levers locked together and jusr relying on the one axis for both, as i mentioned above, there is a switch on the throttle that takes care of this. i was instantly amazed at the increased precision of my flying due to accurate throttle control, this will come as no suprise to hotas owners but it did to me as i was previously using the mouse :) and occassionally the throttle on the stick which is awkward to say the least. being able to feel the throttle position is a vast improvement over continually checking engine rpms etc. looking now to map all the other buttons, hats etc using the inbuilt key mapping of the throttle. might look at changing things around a little, having to plug the standard sfs joystick into the throttle is a hassle as i am now a big fan of my CH combatstick, its very nice... i guess i could pick up a cheap older set of ch rudder pedals and plug them into the throttle, therefore convincing the throttle it is still looking a the joystick. yes thats a good idea :) if you can find one of these throttles for a bargain, i recommend giving it try, perfect for the eagle pilots amoung us. thats it for now, hope you have enjoyed the update, any futher findings i will post here for future reference.
