MIg 21 bis SPO Sounds (launch sounds)

Recommended Posts

Hi to everyone!

I was messing up with the sound files of Mig-21,

was replacing flare sounds etc at (DCS\DCS World\Mods\aircraft\MIG-21bis\Sounds\Effects\Aircrafts\Cockpits)

and i noticed under the SPO sounds three values, (spo-track , spo-lock & spo launch (WAV files not ogg).

So far the biggest problem for a mig-21 fighter pilot is that he knows the whereabouts of the radar source that is beaming him (ok), he knows when he is locked by a radar source but he never knows about the launch time of missile.. So i overwrite the SPO - launch sound with something else (ex bariosa launch warning). I tested and nothing is happening the SPO stays even on launch at the steady lock tone. The sound and files are there for the launch warning (i even notice that the original sound file had a different pitch tone than the lock).

Any heads up anyone?

Yes you're right, there is a different sound, it's like a louder, more insistent lock tone, but I've only heard it a few times.

I think it only makes that sound when it detects certain kinds of missile launches or radar locks, I don't know what ones. If it were real life i'd say only active missiles / radars that the rwr knows for sure are missiles/sam launchers (programmed into the rwr), but since it's dcs, it could be anything.

I have changed the sound file already so i'll notice about what you are saying. The only notice i ever have is that on missile launch some times the signal from the opposing aircraft is interrupted.

Anyhow was looking for some proof about the different tone in a missile shot and found nothing.

But found this from a real mig-21bis manual https://books.google.gr/books?id=Hy6020COY1sC&printsec=frontcover&hl=el&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false

ok so yeah, that first manual says there are two lock tones, one for the ground controlled approach , and one air or ground radar locks...

i guess that makes sense.

Nope there's no missile launch tone... there's just the tracking tone, a general lock tone, and a lock tone if you're being locked by a super strong radar, or many radars at once's combined signal strength...

I wish i could read russian...

IRL the SPO-10 could detect locks and show you a direction. The "All four lights come on" effect only occurs when a radar source is really strong or close. Locks are signified by sound frequency "Sharply growing" and the lights flicking according to this manual. http://www.avialogs.com/en/aircraft/ussr/mikoyangurevitch/mig-21/mig-21bis-pilot-s-flight-operating-instructions.html Page 72.

Only at around 2-5km should locks make all 4 sectors light up. depending on the radar's strength.

Also to test the SPO-15, the pilot has to have his MiG's radar turned on. (I guess the "Test" feature works by seeing if it's picking up your own plane's radar.)

On a side note, I noticed in the sound files there appears to be no outer marker beacon noise, only middle and inner.

Thank you for ur time and the info. But it is what we already know. I raised this thread because i found a sound file on the "spo-launch" warning sounds and i am asking if there is any missile warning adapted to the spo-10 warning sounds. The spo wav files include spo-trak, lock and launch attributes.
