I wonder if that was just a mod or an actual standart feature of the Tomcat

 

That is the standard feature for Tomcats equipped with the TCS unit (nearly all Tomcats after 1985, integrated into the production line in 1984 and retrofitted fleet wide by late 85).

 

TCS for F-14A/B:

It can be slaved to the RADAR, it's intended for long-range Target ID (~10 miles for a fighter sized target), allowing for more BVR engagements under the standard ROE.

 

It displays on the Vertical Display Indicator (VDI) in the Pilot's cockpit - here is Aerosoft's depiction (which matches photos I've seen):

And it displays on the PTID (fishbowl display) of the RIO cockpit.

 

LNS stated that they plan to include this feature - handy and unique feature for DCS (in A-A terms).
