Game crashes if launched through Steam

I recently installed 1.5 beta standalone. This was a fresh, clean install. I added it to my Steam library to get the Steam overlay while in game, but for some reason whenever I launch the game via Steam it crashes almost as soon as the black opening screen with the DCS logo shows up. The game runs just fine if I launch it normally via shortcut or through the Start Menu.

I'm going to keep playing it normally just like I always did, but I'd really like to have the added Steam functionality. Not having to minimise every time someone leaves a message would be a blessing for me.
