Writing a quick, simple mission for NTTR and the Su-25A.

How do I assign a unit as a target? I also have no idea how to assign mission success, but I think I can find that one out - it's just the target assignment that I'm stuck on.

I want the Rooks to attack the M113 convoy between waypoints 4 and 5 (and get an unpleasant surprise in the process... ssshhh! :music_whistling:):

Thanks for any help

You control AI actions by clicking on the unit and then either adding an advanced waypoint action or a triggered action. The difference between the two being that waypoint actions are activated by waypoints (and locked to those waypoints) while triggered actions are activated by a flag (which can be done multiple ways).

The tasks you can select are determined by the task given to the unit (AFAC, CAP, CAS, Intercept, etc). CAS is the recommended task for vehicle attack. For CAS fights, the waypoint/triggered actions are something like:

"CAS" - this is a generic action, you will have little control over what the AI does and results will usually not be desirable unless the mission is extremely simple

"Search and Engage" - Units will look for targets that you specify and try to engage them with weapons you specify using tactics you specify. You can also force the AI to see the target no matter what with one of the checkbox options.

"Search and Engage in Zone" - As above, but search is limited to a circle with a radius you specify.

Thanks for your reply, but I'm not sure that really helps me.

I want to set the M113s as a mission goal target for the player.

Or do I just say in the briefing "Go and drop your load on this bunch of M113s after WP4" (or words to that effect)?

I thought it was possible to actually set an AI unit as a target for the player.

I can't even set the preceeding waypoint as an IP in the editor - it's for nav or nothing, it seems.

I'll have to have a read of the mission editor manual, I think. So much to do, so little time...

Brixmis - I don't think there is any way, specifically to define something as a target in the way you're describing.

You can, however, set up some basic triggers within the mission editor to detect and report when the vehicles have been destroyed.

When you click on the group you've created, you'll see a "NAME" field. By default it will be New Vehicle Group.

Change this name to something easily recognizable, say "M113s"

Go into the trigger menu, and create a new trigger; 1 ONCE, NO EVENT.

In the conditions column

GROUP DEAD (M113s)

In the triggered actions column

MESSAGE TO ALL ("TARGET DESTROYED, RTB", 15)

This will display the "TARGET DESTROYED" message when the group of M113s are all dead.

You can also incoporate a flag into this, and use it as a condition to check if the mission is complete for progression in a full campaign. You'll see the menu for this if you check "MISSION GOALS," I believe it's on the left hand sidebar but it might be in the briefing menu...not in front of the ME at the moment so I can't say for sure :)

My mistake. I actually don't use the mission goals, I like to make things more open ended as in real life where you don't necessarily know that you've completed the goal immediately.

Mission success works on a points system if I recall. You can do as feefifofum suggested and set a trigger to create a flag when the group is destroyed, or a flag that counts up as units are destroyed, etc. You can use the flag to provide the points needed to win the mission.

I'd agree with checking the manual as well. Unfortunately I don't have it or DCS on this computer, so I can't check it myself.

Thank you both, that's useful information. I assumed, from reading other's posts, that people want to know when they have accomplished the mission or hit their targets.

They can check the debrief, of course, as I do, but I just wanted to try and get it how most would want, as it will be the first mission I upload that won't be just a simple target practice or free flight hop.

I'll have to make time to get into it a bit deeper (no more quick half hour of 7 Days To Die before going to bed.... mission editor manual instead! :smartass: ).

Cheers
