I'm curious about something that happened in mission 5.

I was tasked by the JTAC to clear the tank unit, but since there are SA-9 Strela's protecting them, I started by launching Mavericks to them, to clear the way for a safer bombing of the T-90 group.

However, the JTAC wasn't happy about that and issued an "abort!".

How is that usually handled in reality? I would expect it's up to the flight leader to assess and take that kind of decision. Or if an AFAC is in view, shouldn't they allow or even ensure those threats are disposed of first?

I tried to go on without further eliminating them, and predictably enough, I could avoid most of the missiles at first but ultimately got hit, as did most of the flight. I'll just ignore those "orders" next time, I'm not sure whether that could trigger a mission failure though.

I have experienced similar things. I believe its a limitation if the JATAC logic. If we don't kill the primary designated target first he gets upset. It doesn't affect the mission result. I always take out AAA and SAM first, using the optics, then go for the primary target, ignoring any moaning from JATAC about "wrong targets".

The great thing about these missions is that no two re runs play the same. Sometimes the air defences are taken out by our f18's, sometimes not. It makes the missions re playable, adding the element of surprise:)

When you do #6, watch out for the JATAC, Moonbeam. He is positioned amid the enemy armoured units. I used a 97 on them and killed Moonbeam! That caused a "fratricide" call and I lost all combat scores. Either it was a one off, or the JATAC is actually placed there on purpose? Must have been heavily camoflaged, or the enemy armour would have got him first! :music_whistling: The only way I found out was to watch it back on TACVIEW. It would be nice if we could edit the missions, I would use a Preditor there instead.

Anyway, its all superb and the feeling if immersion is there throughout.

Cheers.

Thanks for the tip! Yes, I saw your post about the 6th mission, what a strange position for them to be. Then you had to edit the logbook to clean it up I guess, fratricide looks pretty bad in a career.

Immersion is great, indeed! I really enjoyed the whole flight environment, especially the night launch, at the beginning of 5th (even if I'd rather have a cold start).

I'll ignore the fussiness of the JTAC then, probably just a rookie trying to do it by the book ;)

Yes I am sure you will do fine.

No editing out errors. Although I am tempted, since that's got to be a mistake? Even if the guy had strayed into enemy lines or been overrun, they would have shot him first.....unless the mission designer made him invulnerable or invisible?

However, it just goes to show that from a black and white grainy image, you really can't tell who is the enemy. If we are told to kill people at a location, we do it and reap the rewards or consequences later. We just don't expect JATAC's to order a strike on their own cranium!

As for hot starts, have you tried editing the mission at the start. You may alter the ordinance load, perhaps you can alter the starting position?

Cheers.

I've also experienced the fussiness of the JTAC. Annoying, but you CAN ignore them without getting a mission failure. I often ignore JTAC.

The reason I ignore them is actually because much of the time I have an incredibly difficult time getting them to respond! I'll get part way through the JTAC sequence, like getting the 9 line from them and attempting to read it back or attempting "ready for comments", only to get silence back. I have to try sending multiple times before I get a response from them. This happens quite often whenever I have to use JTAC in a mission. I think the whole logic around JTAC (amongst other things) needs some rework.

I also got severely thwacked by SAMs in M05 (after watching two of my wingmen explode in spectacular fashion while they were attempting to take out air defenses). I'll have to watch out in M06 to not take out Moonbeam. I can't believe they'd put a JTAC in the middle of an enemy formation.... there has to be a story behind how that happened (or it was a bug and not intentional).

I love the way the missions are constructed, and the immersion is pretty good - though it still feels like more could be added in that department. Not complaining! Even with the bugs in the 2.0 alpha and campaign itself, it's a lot of fun to play.
