lonememe Posted April 1, 2016 Posted April 1, 2016 (edited) Hey all, I am in the process of upgrading my mobo/memory/cpu for DCS w/ Oculus Rift. I'm going with an i7 6700k, and some flavor of 1151 mobo that I'm sure will have DDR4 support. The trick is that I realized I have 8GBs of DDR3 that I just bought a year ago that is perfectly fine. I've heard from other members that the jump from DDR3 to 4 isn't huge, and I won't be gaining a ton. However, I'm wondering if the DDR3 I have is worth saving, or if I'd see a performance gain just by going from the spec of DDR3 I have to any DDR4 or high end DDR3? G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666). I can add another one of these for $36, or drop somewhere north of $80 for 16GB of DDR4 (or a shell shocker like this Crucial 16GB DDR4 setup going for $54 http://www.newegg.com/Special/ShellShocker.aspx?cm_sp=Homepage_SS-_-P1_11-139-013-_-04012016&Index=1) Thoughts? Rangi Posted April 2, 2016 Posted April 2, 2016 Square peg, round hole. PC: 6600K @ 4.5 GHz, 12GB RAM, GTX 970, 32" 2K monitor.
lonememe Posted April 4, 2016 Author Posted April 4, 2016 I appreciate the responses, but I'm not sure I made my question entirely clear. If I already have 8GB DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) of decent quality RAM that I bought about a year ago, would it be smarter to just get a matching stick of that for $36, or would it be worth it to spend an extra $30 or so and get a 16GB set of DDR4? From what I've heard, I won't see a huge performance difference between the DDR3 and 4, but I just want to make sure I heard that correctly.
Rangi Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 If you buy a 1151 motherboard you will only be able to use ddr4 as ddr3 will physically not fit, like trying to put a square peg in a round hole. PC: 6600K @ 4.5 GHz, 12GB RAM, GTX 970, 32" 2K monitor.

Ah, that makes sense once you added the pertinent details. I could have sworn I saw some 1151 Mobo's that support DDR3, but I've also been looking at this for months and probably just misremembered. Thanks! So, it's DDR4 or bust.
Demon_ Posted April 4, 2016 Posted April 4, 2016 (edited) Ok Without regard of the form factor (DDR3 or DDR4). Maybe the performance impact between different speed is small (2133Mhz to 2400Mhz (only 1 fps)). But from the slowest ram (1333Mhz) to something faster like the 2400Mhz or 3200Mhz, it's not worth the $36. You already have 7 fps difference between the 2133Mhz and the 3200Mhz. This is not negligible. Edited April 4, 2016 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.

Keep in mind this is for a Rift build, and I have read that anything less than 60FPS is nausea inducing, so that 7FPS might make the difference between spew and no spew! Thanks!
