  1. Oh, nice! Well, I'm currently running 8GB of PC1333, soooo I might see that 7FPS difference if I go all the way up to 3200! Keep in mind this is for a Rift build, and I have read that anything less than 60FPS is nausea inducing, so that 7FPS might make the difference between spew and no spew! Thanks!
  2. Ah, that makes sense once you added the pertinent details. I could have sworn I saw some 1151 Mobo's that support DDR3, but I've also been looking at this for months and probably just misremembered. Thanks! So, it's DDR4 or bust.
  3. I appreciate the responses, but I'm not sure I made my question entirely clear. If I already have 8GB DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) of decent quality RAM that I bought about a year ago, would it be smarter to just get a matching stick of that for $36, or would it be worth it to spend an extra $30 or so and get a 16GB set of DDR4? From what I've heard, I won't see a huge performance difference between the DDR3 and 4, but I just want to make sure I heard that correctly.
  4. Hey all, I am in the process of upgrading my mobo/memory/cpu for DCS w/ Oculus Rift. I'm going with an i7 6700k, and some flavor of 1151 mobo that I'm sure will have DDR4 support. The trick is that I realized I have 8GBs of DDR3 that I just bought a year ago that is perfectly fine. I've heard from other members that the jump from DDR3 to 4 isn't huge, and I won't be gaining a ton. However, I'm wondering if the DDR3 I have is worth saving, or if I'd see a performance gain just by going from the spec of DDR3 I have to any DDR4 or high end DDR3? G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666). I can add another one of these for $36, or drop somewhere north of $80 for 16GB of DDR4 (or a shell shocker like this Crucial 16GB DDR4 setup going for $54 http://www.newegg.com/Special/ShellShocker.aspx?cm_sp=Homepage_SS-_-P1_11-139-013-_-04012016&Index=1) Thoughts?
  5. I've been having this issue too. The mod on the server I play on (OpenConflict) says there isn't a setting for him on his end. I'm going to try the steps I found here later today: https://steamcommunity.com/app/223750/discussions/0/620703493336979361/ Also, please make sure that you've armed the EAC (LAlt+4) before pressing A. The LAAP will not engage if EAC is not armed. Here's the updated checklist: 1. Make sure the autopilot (EAC) is disarmed (LAlt+5). 2. Now turn the EAC on by pressing LAlt+4. LAlt 1 Path Hold then A LAlt 2 Altitude/Heading Hold then A LAlt 3 Altitude/Bank Hold then A So for every autopilot mode, press A after selected to activate it. The HUD will also display an indication on the bottom left.
  6. Not going to lie, I do this too. I'm hoping the Rift will help a bit, as I've heard not having a big monitor and high resolution really makes it more difficult to find ground targets. Really glad to read this thread though and know I'm not the only one squinting at my screen going "where the hell is this thing". The only time I don't have trouble is when the targets are on a road. Even if the targets are on open fields it can be a struggle. I have noticed that some units will kick up dust when they're moving or firing, so that's helpful to spot. Zoom in feature is really the only way I've been able to get better.
  7. Hey all, I've been looking for a HOTAS setup and I was wondering if warranties still apply if you buy one used. There are plenty of used Thrustmaster Warthog's but rarely are they below $300, and they are going for $398 on Amazon new. So I'm wondering why it would make sense to save $98 just to have something break and then not be able to warranty the hardware. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is Saitek better with warranty stuff if you're not the original purchaser? Am I thinking correctly about it being way riskier to spend that much for something that might end up breaking out of warranty? Thanks!
  8. That makes a lot of sense, and I appreciate the car analogy. My DIY interests include home wrenching, so that made complete sense to me! I actually think I'd be way less interested in home wrenching if my Dad never explained that working on a car is (conceptually) a lot like working on a computer. Alright, since the prices have gone down on the i7 and i5, I can justify the extra $140 or whatever it is to get the i7.
  9. Also, regarding TS; Are you guys using a hotkey or just leaving the mic on? I had to think hard about what hot-key to program that wouldn't interfere with a game key (almost impossible for DCS). I programmed the "Pause" key, but it won't work when I'm in game. Also, something I thought about with TS; what is to say that someone on the red team couldn't simply join the blue team's TS groups? I don't think there's anything in game that talks to TS to tell it not to let you in the opposing team's rooms, is there? I *really* want to be able to not worry about reading the chat messages and just using voice comm's. I've gotten nailed before for trying to pay attention to chat, and if you're blue it's super hard to read against some of the terrain. Don't get me wrong, I love talking to you all and it does make me laugh to read some of the stuff, but it's hard to figure out when to pay attention to critical info and when it's just us goofing around in chat.
  10. I was really hoping for something more conclusive on the i5 vs i7 6xxxk decision. Not to thread-jack, but I'm in a similar boat. I've been upgrading in piecemeal fashion, but my current build is old (Phenom II X4 955 at 3.2GHz, 8GB DDR3, the newest edition is an MSI 4Gb GTX970, which did wonders, but yes, I know bottleneck) and I just can't make the choice between a new i5 or i7. I've looked all over the interwebz and it just doesn't sound conclusive for building an Oculus rig for gaming, or DCS for that matter. Both prices have been coming back to Earth (i7 is $373 and i5 is $239 on Amazon), but I could use that money to buy a worthwhile HOTAS (using a very broken Logitech Extreme 3D), rudder pedals, etc. Otherwise, if I already have 8Gigs of DDR3, should I just get another 8, or scrap the DDR3 and get 16 of DDR4? I am excited because it's the first time in 15 years of building my home PCs that I've been able to afford an Intel build!
  11. So when you guys say F5 getting disabled, what does that mean?
  12. I was just perusing the forums and saw this post about my favorite multi-player server! Seriously, this has been an incredible server to learn on. I'm still a newb, but I've had some great times on the server and I have learned a lot from vets there. Is there a donation spot anywhere? I'm currently building up my Oculus rig, saving to replace my broken Logitech Extreme 3D stick with a proper HOTAS, and the only extra module I have for DCS is FC3, but I still want to donate something to this server because that's how valuable I think it is!
  13. I agree with this, but I think I read somewhere that neither of the new Intel chips (i5 or i7 6XXXk) come with stock coolers. Something to consider.
  14. Just out of curiosity, does anyone else have a set of pedals that are just lying around that they'd be willing to part with? I've logged 40 hours in DCS now, but I still am piecing together my setup. Unfortunately I've been using my Logitech joystick with it's crappy twist action for yaw. One piece at a time...
  15. A belated congrats to beniboy and his family. I'd be interested in seeing updates to these phenomenal keyboard maps as well, specifically for the Flaming Cliffs 3 A-10.
