Jaktaz Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 What are the three button/light things underneath the hud in the f-14? They are labeled Gun Rate, SW Cool, and MSL prep.
BlackLion213 Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 What are the three button/light things underneath the hud in the f-14? They are labeled Gun Rate, SW Cool, and MSL prep. IIRC... (disclaimer :)) "Gun Rate" changes the M61 rate of fire, options are 4000 rounds/min or 6000 rounds/min "SW Cool" initiates or indicates that the AIM-9 seeker head has cooled "MSL Prep" is for AIM-7/AIM-54 launches (not sure of the specifics). -Nick
Grundar Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 (edited) SW Cool I believe is linked to the SW seeker head which of course cools itself prior to launch to aid in detection of heat signature. The AIM-9L used Argon Gas to cool itself. 5000psi is the pressure of the Argon so it can be used for multiple coolings, once it drops below 2500-3000 I beleive it is much less effective. I believe that these AIM-9's required cooling to be activated by the launching craft (ie this F-14 in this case). Once the missile was cold I believe the light went off again (or maybe it only lit when it had achieved the cold required). Edit: Beaten by Blacklion! :P 2nd Edit: By about 1.5hrs >_> lol should of read the reply first >_< Edited May 2, 2016 by Grundar

lunaticfringe Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 (edited) SW COOL can initiate cooling, or it can be initiated by throwing the ACM MODE switch under the left cover. Either way, it does light up to indicate. MSL PREP initiates cooling of AIM-54s, and performs tuning of both AIM-54 and AIM-7 missiles. If the LIQ COOLING switch (RIO cockpit, left hand console) isn't thrown to AWG-9/AIM-54 prior to takeoff, you're SOL. Edited May 3, 2016 by lunaticfringe

Awesome, thanks! Also, when a Tomcat pilot says "my radar-guided missiles won't tune", his indication is the failure of the MSL PREP light to illuminate? (And maybe something else on the RIO side?) -Nick
lunaticfringe Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 More aptly to be a lit MSL PREP, but a failed BIT on the RIO's TID. The pilot doesn't have any interaction with the tuning other than activating the signal function to the missiles, and he doesn't have any faults to display from it. Management would likely be all on the RIO side with the Computer Address Panel, although I don't have the applicable manuals (all with the prefix *A) to tell you specifically yes or no.

Jaktaz Posted May 3, 2016 Author Posted May 3, 2016 Thanks for the explanation on what weapon systems their linked to, but are they buttons? or indication lights?
lunaticfringe Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Both. You press the button and it lights up as an indicator.
