GGTharos Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 There is many features in KA-50 that are not implemented, not working correctly or just simply totally missing. And A/A is one of those, like is as well the fragmentation simulation. Not really. The Vikhr is no AAM, and it never will be. Some of the weaknesses vs dedicated AAMs are not even modeled - but that's a minor thing. That it can be effective against helis is fine, but that's because helis are barely faster than a car on a highway. That doesn't make it an AAM ... just an AGM with a secondary capability - which in RL is available to AGM-65's, 114s, and others. Oh, and NASA developed special pen, because a lead in the pencil doesn't work so well when contacting a computers wires or other electronics.... They took a COTS pen, and it was quite cheap ... unlike what certain propaganda would have you believe :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Pen Of note is that both NASA and USSR used pencils, and both switched to space pens. Sure it isn't dedicated to that but it is so fast that it can be used for low level flying targets. Problem is still the laser tunnel guidance (no lead). Does those others have a pre-fragmented sleeve with a secondary explosive that is activated when launching missile in A/A mode and use a different fuze while so? i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.
GGTharos Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 (edited) Cars dont drive 250-300kph or 500m/s. Sure it isn't dedicated to that but it is so fast that it can be used for low level flying targets. Problem is still the laser tunnel guidance (no lead). Speed is really a non-issue when it's a head-on or tail-on situation for missile maneuvering, unless those speeds are extreme. Does those others have a pre-fragmented sleeve with a secondary explosive that is activated when launching missile in A/A mode and use a different fuze while so? They score direct hits instead. Some are purely armor-piercing, some have frag or thermobaric warheads, but no prox fuze. Neither do most MANPADS. The belt is there primarily for infantry, and it just happens to be useful vs. aircraft. The fuze itself isn't that great (Very short ranged) which makes a lot of sense for such a small missile. It's there so that the missile can be used against a target approaching with a certain speed. Most MANPADS have no proximity fuze ... they've got maneuver and PN guidance instead. Anyway all of this is pointless. Vikhr isn't an AAM, it just happens to be useful against airborne targets under specific circumstances. If helis in this game didn't have magical stealth - thus forcing fighters to come down low to find them - you'd be feeling a real need for those real heli-mounted AAMs. What's next, we're going to start calling MBT guns ack-ack because you just might be able to shoot down a heli with one? :) Edited August 15, 2016 by GGTharos [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
ShuRugal Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 What's next, we're going to start calling MBT guns ack-ack because you just might be able to shoot down a heli with one? :) I don't know about MBT mounts, but those BMP mounted Shipunovs definitely qualify... at least until someone tells the ground unit AI that the BMP-2 doesn't actually have a proper AA sight....
