some1 Posted December 17, 2016 Posted December 17, 2016 The illumination should not be visible in daylight. The instruments were painted with radioactive paint which caused faint glow at night. If the radiation was so strong to make them glow in the sunlight, then all pilots would quickly die from radiation sickness. NeilWillis Posted December 17, 2016 Posted December 17, 2016 Like the girls who painted the dials you mean? It is quite conceivable that they were dangerous to the flight crews as well - radiation sickness wasn't even discovered until 1945 when the bombs were dropped on Japan. I'd dispute the quickly part of your post too. It can take decades for radiation sickness to become symptomatic.
some1 Posted December 17, 2016 Author Posted December 17, 2016 Not sure why you bring the painters into the discussion, they were much more exposed to radioactive material than the flight crews. The point of my comment is that if a radioactive object near you is glowing as strong as the sunlight, then you have hours to live at best.
