Quick question, is there a way to make heading compass working correctly without doing INS Alignment ?

Thanks

Well you can disable INS alignment in the special options tab for the module. Other than that there is no 'Fast erect' or similar realistic option. You can only look at the emergancy magnetic compass.

€dit: Disregard. See Az' post below.

Yes there is.

CMGS (compas gyro-magnétique secours / emergency gyro-magnetic compass).

PSM left knob on VEI (<= the fact that this is needed may be a bug, AFAIK; but it's an easy-to-workaround one)

Heading/horizon switch to forward (forces use of CGMS-provided heading).

Ah right, thanks for correcting me. Now I remember reading about this emergency mode. Never needed nor used it though. Heading/horizon switch doesn't click atm either, but I'm sure gonna find out once I'm home. :)

Found it. :) That's really neat, love finding out about new stuff like this. Shows that you never stop learning.

Now, is there a way to get rid of the 'Horizon secours'? ^^

I can live with "horizon secours" . It's not that really annoying considering I can now scramble the jet with heading compass working.

Well, I'd hate spending 8 minutes to wait INS Alignment only to find out 3 - 4 minutes later to be shot down by enemy fighters waiting me airborne lol

You can do quick align (level 4, less accurate).

As soon as the INS displays "4" on the top left, in STS mode, you're set (edit: ofc you need to switch to NAV).

I only lasts 4 minutes.

Well, this is one of the reasons I love DCS. You learn new thing everyday. Thank you PiedDroit.

But in scramble situation like in BF even 4 minutes feels long lol.

Welcome

The fastest way to start the alignment is to ask for ground power, once you have it and master power switch is ON, you can put the INS in ALN mode, validate and carry on your startup (otherwise you'd need the engine running).

Normally you would enter the initial lat/lon position in PREP 00 before starting the alignment, but if you only care about basic alignment, you can skip that part too ;)

Well, then probably BF needs some tuning.

You don't scramble from cold & dark IRL.

You prep the aircraft. Then it's ready to scramble. And when need arises, you start up and take off far quicker than 4 or 8 minutes.

That's QRA.

I get it may be impossible (for now) to set exactly this up in DCS. But there are probably ways to make it somehow similar, to even ground without pushing pilots to depart from approved moves and into a kind of air-quake.

For example, no pilot ever took off IRL for a fight without a functionnal INS. It's against SOPs (and logic). Cap/Horizon Secours are just this, secours = emergency; that means in case of in-flight failure. ;)

Yes I agree with you Azrayen. That's the way you do in real life. But as I understand, they did it mostly because to avoid air-quake things. They even made lives limited to only 4 every six hours or so IIRC. Its very challenging.

Now that you mentioned QRA, quick reaction alert ? There's a button on lower right corner and its rather hidden labeled as (network alert, QRA) IIRC, but when I flipped it suddenly it all gone dark in cockpit. What is exactly its function ?

Thanks
