Since DCS only uses 1-2 cores, wouldn't it be better to OC only one or two cores?

I have a i7 2600k which I OC to 4.2Ghz but if I set the overclocking in the Bios to the "per core" setting to overlclock only 1 or 2 cores I can reach 5.3Ghz with one core and 5.0Ghz with two cores.

And I even found the limit, yet.

You will need to set affinity then as well but it might work. Give it a try :)

I would not exceed 1.35V either way, I burned my 2600k with 1.35V over 2 years time, just a friendly warning. It DOES NOT MATTER if it stays cool, what kills is the current, not the possible higher temp. Remember this !

Good advice, thanks  Is this a general limit and does it also apply to a 4790K? How far do you reckon a 4790K can be overclocked?

I usually running it at 4.4 GHz but am tempted to go a little higher :) I got a Noctua NH-D15 cooler.

Agree with Bit, voltage cause more damage than temperature. More Vcore will increase electro-migration and so decrease the life-span of your CPU.

No, each specific CPU has thier own Voltage "laws" to obey.

This 1.35V is actually specific for the last batch of 2600k with D2 (iirc) stepping.

Google your 4790k for oc advices, you will get some general idea where the red area begins if you read more than 1 review and make your own picture.

Did a quick google and Tom says 1.25 gave them stable 4.4GHz on ALL cores and at 1.31V they could run the suites with all cores at 4.6 and single threaded till 4.8.....as a guideline

Ok, it didn't work like i thought it would.

OCed to 5.3Ghz did not give me any additional fps.

The problem was, i had to disable Turbo Boost.

With Turbo Boost on the Cpu did not overclock on only two cores. After I deactivated Turbo Boost I can only get 200mhz more than with all 4 cores OCed.
