well you'd use auto pilot only when you know you are not in hostile zone... level flight or enroute auto pilot. If you are flying a ground attack aircraft and use stand off weapons you could use auto pilot also to keep aircraft level while you search for target(s).

 

So I guess it can be helpfull in training you to use air to ground weapons and systems. You could even use it to guide you to base when you want to land... once you're close enough to runway and nice and level, incomming straight to the runway, you disengage it and just land the aircraft yourself.
