Padlock for close combat

Is it possible to use padlock against bogeys for close combat in the Mirage ?

 

 

The only padlock I have found so far padlocks the middle of my screen with a red circle...

You probably miss the "lock"... Padlock work only if what you want to lock is near the center of the screen and sufficiently close (something like 10nm/5km).
