How do you deal with descending through cloud cover? I had hoped terrain avoidance mode would nerf the problem, but it provides such a small vertical return that when I’m flying back down it doesn’t inform me of an approaching ridge until it’s too late to avoid it.

I try to avoid ascending through cloud cover but sometimes (eg when flying through a canyon) I don’t realize until the only way out is up.

Is there a technique for dealing with cloud cover or do you have to rely on best guess and crossed fingers too?

forgot which way round, so not much help, unless you get my drift, on for example the viggen you can choose ground height modes, one I'm sure is radar and the other is sea level, choosing the right one will help as you will see your ground height change

Gotcha, it will def help to see how quickly I'm gaining or losing altitude, thanks :)

no probs, glad you got my drift :), it helps me anyway, not fool proof, I have still hit the deck !

I tend to test it on flat ground before going into the valleys where you can see the diff in the height reading

Yeah, good point, knowing how close the terrain below me is doesn't guarantee there isn't a mountain in front of me, but it will help just the same
