I was kinda late with this transition (Win 7 to Win 10), but finally did it last week, and was surprised big time to see that it did the upgrade to Win 10 using my existing Win 7 key. (you can't do a fresh install of Win 10 using Win 7 key, but if you do an upgrade - it picks your key automatically)

Once you have done that though, you can do a fresh install of Win 10 and MS will activate it using the information from your upgrade process.
