Fri13 Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 That is very interesting approach for the problem. But I think the mechanical is just a stepping stone for the better one. No we have a limitation of the VR display panels resolution as we are required to render all in full resolution so it is heavy for GPU as it is physical limitation for screen/optics size so we don't get wide field of view. This is nice attachment, as the CEO told that you just throw a plugin to Unity etc and it works, developers don't need to do anything else. And we get very high resolution center area of field of view that gets rendered higher and then rest surrounding is rendered at lower resolution. The big benefit here is that there is no need for complex hardware to track the eyes where someone is looking, but it is not helping in the future when a 4K, 5K, 6K and 8K panels for mobile phones starts to appear. As then at that point anyone can just put a 4K per eye or 5K per eye for resolution but then do on software side only the high resolution rendering in the center and low resolution rendering in the surrounding area. The future will be likely that we get the high resolution panels but with eye tracking. So instead software just rendering center in full resolution, the tracking system detects where someone is looking and software renders that area in full resolution. That has own software challenges as you need to have low latency but quick data I/O for new location. So I would say that this Varjo HMD is like a VR "1.2" where we are all waiting "1.5 or 2.0". i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.
