Tips for radar searching

Before this module I use to fly the A10 and WW2 planes, so my radar knowledge isn't so good. Can anybody give me tips on searching using the radar. I was doing some of the instant action 2 v 2's and 1 v 1's and if I lost sight of an opponent that decided to run, I really had a hard time picking them up on radar. I am changing the width and number of bars of the scan as well as the antenna elevation, but to be honest I fumble around searching for a few minutes before consulting the F10 screen for a general bearing. Any tips?

I highly suggest watching the following video. Even though it's demonstrated on the F-15, the principles apply to the F-18, and it should give you a greater understanding of how to scan the sky you want to scan, and to undrestand what you're not seeing in the radar display (equally important)

Thanks that helped. I have some instances where I don’t understand why I’m not seeing them. For example. I was at the same altitude about 5 miles trail. Radar was set to 1 bar scan 20 degree and tdc was at my altitude. They eventually showed up after about 30 seconds but I don’t get why it took that long.

That's a really narrow search - as a default I tend to run 4 Bar, 80deg and memory of 8 (click data and top right is memory - click the button next to it to cycle). That should help with picking up targets.

I would suggest setting up missions with an AWAC in the air.

 

 

 

Once they give a call, I would pause the sim, and think about how I am going to set up the radar to pick up the target. Over time I hope to get better myself.
