imacken Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 I am really struggling with this. I don't know if there are certain conditions for the NWS HI to work, but often when experimenting on runways or after landings, I just can't make it work. Sometimes I press the HI button and things are OK, but most of the time, it actually stops me turning. For example, if I am in a normal NWS turn, and then I press (and hold) the HI button, I stop turning. It's only with a few stabs of the HI button that I eventually can get this working. Sometimes too late as I go off the runway. It's not the button on my HOTAS either, as I have tried re-assigning it to others with the same effect. Seems to work better when I am going very slowly. imacken Posted June 28, 2018 Author Posted June 28, 2018 OK, I'll give that a go a bit later. So, are you saying that HI will not work at all if the plane is in even a slight turn already? So, if you were in a turn that clearly wasn't going to be enough, and you needed HI to make the turn, you would you have to stop all movement, come to a halt and engage HI from there? backspace340 Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 HI seems to be mainly for spinning around slowly without much forward movement (i.e. for moving around on the carrier). I have noticed that it doesn't like being used with full rudder deflection - it's like the wheel turns in on itself and so either stops or turns the other way - between 50-70% rudder deflection towards the direction you want to go seems optimal for turning with NWS HI.
BeefCayke Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 Just press F2 while taxiing and you will see what the problem is. If you taxi too fast and then try to make a tight turn with NWS HI on, the nosewheel will turn so much that the tires will just scrape over the ground. Taxiing at a lower speed should solve your problem.
Joker328 Posted June 28, 2018 Posted June 28, 2018 You don't have to start from a stop. Just don't engage it mid turn. Neutralize the rudder, engage NWS HI, and then slowly roll on the rudder in the appropriate direction. As others have said, going to far will just lock the nose wheel sideways. imacken Posted June 28, 2018 Author Posted June 28, 2018 Got it, guys. Thanks for your help in this. Looking from F2 showed exactly what was going on. Don't know why I didn't think of that! All sorted.
