animaal Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 I've looked in the Mig21 DCS documentation, and can't see a dscription of the radar "lock" mechanism. E.g. - The situation is that I'm attacking a bomber that has a single fighter as an escort. I want to pick off the escort first. Before I'm within firing range, I can see them both on the horizon. They are moving left to right. The bomber is in front, the fighter trailing slightly behind. On my radar, I can see I have two contacts, very close together. So close that they mostly overlap, that I can't tell whether I'm locking onto the bomber or the fighter. Does the radar lock onto: (a) the contact within the radar brackets with the minimal range from me (b) the "most central" contact - the one closest to the direction my nose is pointing © any random contact within the radar brackets (d) some other algorithm? Thanks. Sinclair ZX Spectrum 48K, Kempston joystick Interface, Alba Cassette Recorder, Quickshot II Turbo Joystick
BadHabit Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 The "TDC" moves only up&down and seats on your heading, so yes you point your nose to the target. You can move the TDC and choose the target yourself by placing the target inside the brackets and press & hold the lock button until it is locked. If two target overlap or are very close you can not be sure which one you locked, maybe bird eye view (lock display) may give you some info on bandit position. Also what I find useful in that situation, when a target is near but outside the TDC brackets and you try to lock it usually flashes as the beam tries to "catch" it so maybe that way you may now what you will be locking, more of a exploit but it works in times. vvaris Posted January 20, 2019 Posted January 20, 2019 Sorry this doesn't exactly answer your question but solution to this nevertheless is to use the fixed beam option.
animaal Posted January 20, 2019 Author Posted January 20, 2019 (edited) Thanks, a couple of good ideas there. Especially the "flashing" of contacts outside the TDC, and Fixed Beam.
