Dear all,

Despite many pedagogic videos about the subjet, I endure very low success with my AIM54: approx. 20% killing rate. I tested mostly versus average to very good Mig 21, Mig 19 and Su 24 in various angles, always between 15 and 50 nM, using simply TWS. I wait until a numeric appears at right on the radar contact(s), then simply fire. Isn't that 20% killing rate a bit low, am I doing something wrong?

Is this in PvE or PvP? Because I have had spectacular results with the AIM-54A Mk-60’s online with a human RIO, scored a 77NM kill a few days ago. I have found that getting slightly below the contact allows the AWG-9 to remain tracking the target in TWS for much longer than it does at a height greater than the target. The longer the 54 can be guided with TWS the much higher the probability of kill is!

I had 3 kills in one sortie shot from 30 - 40 miles. AIM-54 is insane lol

Generally the issue (in PvE) is that Jester loses lock multiple times when firing from longer distances. At distances of 25 miles my AIM-54s get an easy 90% kill rate.

Soon I'll be testing with a human RIO, I expect things to change significantly.

I launch mostly in TWS. Kind of made some of the missions (like the PG mission with the flight of Mig-29s) a bit of a joke as I feel off a series of Phoenixes then slow down to guide them in until they go Pitbull and splash all four before they even get within range.

I reserve PD-STT lock for when things get closer and it is Sparrow time.

I was going to ask about this. Are there any things one should be doing to help Jester not lose lock so easily in BVR scenarios? I set up a test mission with an Il-76 flying an orbit as my 'target drone'. Jester sees him, locks him up, Phoenix away and then he loses the plane on radar not long afterwards despite me having continued onward towards the target, straight and level.

What happens in this situation.

You take a AIM-54s shot in TWS not STT, and during the flyout you lose the track, the target notches or something. Presumably the missile at that point continues towards the last target update position it received.

What happens if you then regain the TWS track, does the missile start receiving updated midcourse guidance or is it on its own from losing the initial track?

Technically it should start tracking again. From the docs:

In all of the guidance modes the seeker head automatically switches to a passive ECM follow if jammed, angle-tracking the target until it can again track the target using SARH or ARH. This is done without crew action and is not indicated to the operator.
