I watched that several times last night. Still having a hard time. He gets a white box automatically when it picks up a heat signature but I have to slew to find it. Put it in point mode. I’m not sure if it’s full action button that locks on. It’s all new to me. I’m doing it from the Mod in the pilot position.

Yes to lock a target you need to use LANTIRN trigger full action and you need to be in range.

Half action = "laser ranging"

Full action = Mark point (with coordinates)

I normally use Area Track (AT) first, at range, and Point Track (PT) first when I'm closer.

PT is very dependant on contrast, and I usually have to switch between WHOT/BHOT to get it to "lock".

I also find PT to be a bit unstable, causing a break of lock to throw you back to RATES mode and lose track of target (very annoying on terminal guidence) - so I mostly stick to AT.

A slight clockwise turn after pickle also helps eliminate "the 180 twist" for the seeker head, when passing directly over the target, useally causing the lock/stabilization to break.
