fitness88 Posted June 28, 2019 Posted June 28, 2019 What does the pilot being radar scanned hear or see in their plane when you?: STT...second press of the designator? LTWS DTWS L&S and D2...do you get a shoot cue? cage / uncage sometimes works and sometimes not with sidewinder, is there a certain parameter that has to be met? Thank you.
backspace340 Posted June 28, 2019 Posted June 28, 2019 1. Lock warning. If you shoot a radar missile (7/120), launch warning. 2. Nails (search radar) 3. What is DTWS? 4. If you're in LTWS still, then nails, if you've gone into STT, then lock warning. 5. The enemy won't hear anything if you cage/uncage the sidewinder (as long as you're not also locking them, if you STT lock them in an ACM mode, see above).
Jak525 Posted June 28, 2019 Posted June 28, 2019 I think by DTWS he means dedicated track while scan. This is just track while scan. There's three main radar modes - RWS, TWS, and velocity search (VS). You don't get a shoot cue in RWS because it doesn't allow a weapon launch. You still get the LARs though. For the AMRAAM you should get a shoot cue in TWS when it is implemented. And of course you do now in single target track.

fitness88 Posted June 28, 2019 Author Posted June 28, 2019 (edited) Designated Track While Scan (DTWS) is what I was referring to. When you press 1 time on designator when cursor is over tgt, it allows for 2 targets to be designated while still scanning isn't that DTWS but TWS isn't enabled yet? Then when you press a second time it goes to STT. What is 'L&S' actually referring to? anyone finding cage/uncage sometimes will work but not always. Are there specific perameters that have to be met? Thanks guys for you input! Edited June 28, 2019 by fitness88
Jak525 Posted June 28, 2019 Posted June 28, 2019 No, when you designate an L&S or DT2 in RWS that's RWS (with LTWS enabled). You'll be able to do the same in TWS however. L&S is an abbreviation for launch & steering target. It's just a pilot designation so you can have a TD box on the HUD/HMD and it will put a star on the HAFU. In TWS we'll be able to guide an AMRAAM on the L&S. (The Sparrow and guided gun reticle require STT. AIM-9 is always slaved to the L&S regardless of mode but STT is most practical.) You need the seeker to see a target to uncage the Sidewinder. For the 9L/M this is a loud growl and for the 9X this is a steady tone.

Yes I always knew what L&S stood for but was never sure what it actually did when I was in L&S. So the Sidewinder first has to be seeker locked [not radar lock] before you can cage/uncage? I thought when selected the AIM-9 is boresight by default and with cage/uncage it can be taken off boresight and allowed to be seeker active to track on its own, all without radar? It will also automatically radar track when radar enabled or when in auto acquisition...correct?

AIM-9 operation is as follows: NO L&S Seeker is boresighted to the HUD / HMD (when looking away from HUD). Cage/uncage will make the seeker track a contrasting target if it sees one. L&S DESIGNATED Seeker is slaved to the line of sight to the L&S.

Jak525 Posted June 29, 2019 Posted June 29, 2019 And will have a box or diamond around the L&S target?Yes. If an L&S is designated, it will always have a target designator (TD) box/diamond around it. And of course with the AIM-9 there will be the circle indicating the missile seeker as well.
