Speedywrx Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 I tried posting this in the big Valve Index thread, but it got buried in other comments. Anyone upgrade from the original Odyssey to the Index? I'd like to hear your take on a few comparisons: 1) Tracking 2) SDE 3) Clarity (plane spotting) 4) Panel (OLED vs LCD) and glare i7-7700k OC'd to 5.0 GHz, ASUS 1080ti OC, 32 GB 3200 MHz G.Skill, Samsung 960 pro M.2, Thrustmaster Warthog, Saitek pedals, Valve Index HMD
Strong05 Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 Yes, I've had or still have OG Vive, Odyssey, Rift, and now Index. 1: Better then Odyssey, but mainly in regards to the controllers. For a seated experience it's really hard for me to tell the difference. 2: SDE is better in the Index then any other headset I've had thus far. 3: Clarity is better but primarily in regards to reading text/gauges in the cockpit. It might be easier to spot planes but that's harder to qualify for me based on my experience thus far. 4: Glare and god rays are worse then the Odyssey, and the biggest thing I notice is that the LED panel has a blue tint and is somewhat washed out in comparison to the OLED panel in the odyssey. Lens clarity is also better, but you have to be patient and find the sweet spot. Getting into the sweet spot also helps keep the glare and god rays down. All that being said, I'm not planning on returning my index as of now. I think the index represents a better compromise then the odyssey, but I also play room scale games (pavlov) and was switching between Odyssey and vive pending the type of game. With the index it's one headset for everything. The index is also much more comfortable then the odyssey (on par once you ad an extra strap to the Odyssey). I'm also seeing more FPS then I was seeing in the Odyssey as the better clarity comes at a lower PD (1.4/1.5 vs 1.8 in steam) and with 120hz mode steam lets it interpolate frames at 40 and 60 FPS. So I now routinely see 60 FPS which is more then the 45 I was getting with the Odyssey. 5800X3d, 32GB DDR4@3400, 6800 xt, Reverb G2, Gunfighter/TMWH
Speedywrx Posted July 30, 2019 Author Posted July 30, 2019 Thank you for sharing, Strong05. I'm having a terrible time with my Odyssey tracking. I'm in a brightly lit room too. Glad to hear about the SDE because I recall the way the Odyssey OLED panel was laid out, there was something about the way the pixels were arranged that was anti-SDE. Anyone else care to share their experiences? i7-7700k OC'd to 5.0 GHz, ASUS 1080ti OC, 32 GB 3200 MHz G.Skill, Samsung 960 pro M.2, Thrustmaster Warthog, Saitek pedals, Valve Index HMD
Strong05 Posted July 30, 2019 Posted July 30, 2019 I believe that's only the Odyssey plus. The OG Odyssey has the standard OLED pentile pixel layout. 5800X3d, 32GB DDR4@3400, 6800 xt, Reverb G2, Gunfighter/TMWH
