Sarpalaxan Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 After conquering the Mig's 15 and 19 I Recently started to feel quite at home in the Mig-21. But diving a bit deeper into the controls even somewhat getting the idea of how to control the Nose Cone Manually to gain a few kph of ias before my engine shuts down I must admit that one topic still confuses me. Engine Surge Shutters. There are two types of Shutters on the Mig-21. One pair of bigger inward opening shutters below the cockpit and a Pair of smaller outward opening Shutters in the front. But the Manual always just speaks of the Engine Surge shutters. The larger pair opens on the Ground and seems to help getting air into the engine at low speeds. They close Automatically after Take-off and I haven't been able to find any Manual control for them. The Shutters in the front only seem to open when I switch the Surge Shutter control to manual and close on auto. When you extend your nosecone too far out you start getting loud metal clunks which the Manual describes as the shutters opening and closing. But when I look outside and have the shutter control in auto both shutters stay closed. When I Open them manually the noise still remains. Right now I only know of one switch that could have anything to do with it which is the Engine Nozzle Position 2 Switch. However, I haven't jet figured out what this does. Am I Missing something or have I just reached the limits of what is and isn't simulated in the Module?
portman Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 (edited) The shutters in the front are the engine surge shutters and they are controlled hydraulically if I'm not mistaken. You can also control them manually. There's no manual control for the larger shutters (I believe they called it "start shutters" back then) below the cockpit, as they are vacuum-actuated. The loud metal clunks you can hear are the symptoms of what the manual describes as "powerplant surge". The engine nozzle switch lets you close the engine nozzle manually in case there's a failure of the nozzle automatic control system. It has nothing to do with the nosecone control or powerplant surge. Edited August 9, 2019 by portman Mancher zum Meister sich erklärt, dem nie das Handwerk ward gelehrt!
Sarpalaxan Posted August 9, 2019 Author Posted August 9, 2019 Ok thank you. Now it all makes a lot more sense. I Think I still was hoping to find the Magical Ferry dust switch that makes the Engine not go out as much as it does.
