New Flight control education

Greetings my fellow virtual aviators,

 

I think its time for a new flight control set-up, as my trusty X-52 is feeling the effects after years of service. :pilotfly:

 

What are the options nowadays in terms of good quality flight controls?

 

I see various companies selling different bits of kit, but I wouldn't have a clue on who to look at, who to stay away from, good build quality etc etc…

 

So help a fellow DCS'er out and educate me :thumbup:

Respectfully: State your budget.

Because fairly easy answer would be: Go to the either Virpil or VKB controller section and check which one you prefer. Prices? Around 400+ € for the stick setup, same for the throttle.

 

And you can pay more for other products as you can easily find here.

 

 

But I do not own them, I am humble MS Sidewinder FF2 jockey - just it seems that every owner is happy with them

I have set a budget of around £350 - £400 for a decent HOTAS set-up.

 

I also appreciate the title of the post could have been appropriately worded, but that's the consequence of lunch time drinking.

VirPil joy + throttle will cost more ~twice this budget.

 

In this price range the natural option Warthog HOTAS - if already have a rudder pedal, buy may find a combo that include TFRP rudder (the cheap rudder option of market). Anyway both cost £448,48 in Amazon.uk

 

Or VKB Gunfighter base + SCG Premuium grip = 323 (Euro) or MCG PRO = 339 (Euro) plus Thrustmaster TWCS throttle ~73 (EURO), this throttle have "paddles" as "ad hoc" rudder or use SCG grip embedded "twist rudder".

What do you think about a Virpil Monoos T-50CM2 Base, with a TM F-18 Grip? I already have a set of rudder pedals. That would just leave me to consider a throttle?

Thus from humble question you immediately go after one of the possible top combos. What I have learnt so far:

- if you want TM compatibility, go for the Virpil bases. VKB is not direct one and their adapter is a rare fish to catch

- if you want desktop-only solution, Virpil's WarBRD is probably way to go, although both top bases by VKB and Virpil are also great.

- for extension and top dog - it seems that people prefer VKB's controller a little more. Told by people claiming to own both of them

- if you want factory package, both Virpil and VKB are great

 

Virpil has throttle so you may have their HOTAS and deal with one software to rule them both ;)

 

As for throttle there is IMHO easy choice:

TM TWCS -> TM Warthog -> Virpil throttle unit

quality and price go up in this way. I have TWCS and it is nice piece for fairly little money. Just smoothness of the movement is suffering from stickness.

You want something better for i.e twin engine very sophisticated bird and have money to spend? Buy Warthog.

You still have fair sum of money left? Buy Virpil

 

Go to the Virpil sub-forum and ask people there about that base

A very good option, but will eat a bit more than your budget = 290 + 230 (EURO).

 

Anyway you can keep using X-52 throttle until buy a new throttle.
