DCS FIGHTER PILOT Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 The Aim-54 is advertised to obtain a top speed of hypersonic values. Is the current HB Phoenix currently doing this? Top speed appears to be around 2500 knots when shot at 30000ft in game which is slightly faster than the AMRAAMS top speed. This still seems to be a bit slow. Am I wrong?
TeamMaximus Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 The Aim-54 is advertised to obtain a top speed of hypersonic values. Is the current HB Phoenix currently doing this? Top speed appears to be around 2500 knots when shot at 30000ft in game which is slightly faster than the AMRAAMS top speed. This still seems to be a bit slow. Am I wrong? The U.S. Navy fact sheet on the Phoenix lists a top speed of "in excess of 3000 mph", which is around 2600 knots, so the in-game speed is close, but maybe a bit slow. DCS FIGHTER PILOT Posted March 3, 2020 Author Posted March 3, 2020 A bit old but it seems pretty legitimate http://www.designation-systems.net/dusrm/m-54.html
near_blind Posted March 3, 2020 Posted March 3, 2020 As with any missile, the brochure speed is only going to be achieved by firing in optimal conditions, in this case above 30,000 feet and going near or at Mach 1.6. The Phoenix is also a t h I c c missile, and will be greatly effected by drag at lower altitudes.
r4y30n Posted March 4, 2020 Posted March 4, 2020 Yeah, I would test above 40,000. Should be able to shoot it into low orbit if you're high and fast enough at launch.
