It has been a long time since I last sat down and watched Top Gun...and about 5 minutes in I had to jump into DCS.

During those 5 minutes, I noticed the quality of the footage kind of suffered. So just for kicks, I wanted to apply the techniques I use for image stacking for my Astrophotography to see if I can get a couple of decent shots from the movie. Basically stacking as many good frames together as I can to filter out the noise and get as clear a shot as I can.

Below are links to some before and after shots for comparison.

Brilliant!

I own a (cheap) telescope but only for visual and not photography.

So I guess that in the "image #1 after", the aircraaft looks better while the pilot and the sea look blurry because the former has been still in the frames and the latter have moved.

Planes: FC3, Spitfire, Harrier, F-14, F-18, MiG-21, Edge 540 - Helicopters: UH-1H, Mi-8 - Environments: Persian Gulf, Supercarrier

PC specs in the spoiler

I run DCS 2.7 using:

MasterWatt 550 semi-fanless and semi-modular, core i7-3770 (4 cores @ 3.8 GHz) with 8 GB DDR3, GTX1050 Ti (768 cores @ 1.8 GHz) with 4 GB GDDR5, 5.1 sound card, 240 GB SSD, Windows 8.1T.16000M FCS Flight Pack (i. e. stick+throttle+rudder pedals), opentrack head trakcer

Have you tied the 4K HDR release of Top Gun? Funny what you mention was somewhat intentional during making and also limitations at the time.

Anyway, I watched the 4K yesterday and there is a noticeable upgrade in some shots given they re-scanned the original negatives in 4K. I think this review sums it up best "I think the best way to describe it is that the film looks its vintage without showing its age. And that’s exactly what you want from a release like this."

For me the highlight was the Atmos mix. We have a 5.4.2 setup and it was very enjoyable.

Nice work on the shots - perhaps you could lend them a hand with some combat footage!
