Alon_D Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 Hello everyone I was happy to explain How to manage AOA Indexer While flying and landing time I also read about the guide but couldn't quite understand
Frederf Posted May 1, 2020 Posted May 1, 2020 The indexer is the 3-light object on the left eyebrow. The color of light shining matches the color coding on the AOA indicator. The color regions also correspond to the FPM positioning relative to the AOA bracket on the HUD. The indexer displays a green light at 13+-1° with amber or red at less or more AOA respectively. During flight the indexer operates as during landing but there is no typical need to reference it. Typically approach is flown at 11° which is "top of bracket" and amber light section. Approach may also be flown at 13° per pilot technique or mandatory in the case of a minimum run landing which corresponds to the green light section. Touchdown should always be accomplished as near as possible to 13°. After touchdown the airplane is typically flown in the aerobrake two point attitude which also corresponds to the 13° green light section. It is important to maintain sufficient AOA during aerodynamic braking as less than 11° is significantly less effective. Personally I recommend utilizing the AOA HUD bracket as primary AOA reference during approach and touchdown if possible. Cross reference the indexer as needed especially for hazardous AOA excisions into the red. After touchdown however the indexer, shining the green light, is an excellent primary pitch reference for two point aerodynamic braking phase.
