S77th-GOYA Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 Well, they have to see you first. Luck here is important, as is your own positioning and maneuvering - a little intelligence which you can gather while say *ahem* high and a speed dive to a say ah, valley paralelling his, counts a bunch of seconds and if you're lucky he'll be right where you want him and he'll never see you hopping the ridgeline and getting on his six, trackIR or no. While you're in this speed dive towards the parallel valley, what is the bandit doing? Are you on his 9 through 3 o'clock? You'd better hope he's clipping his toenails or something because you know he should be scanning up and looking left and right. And when he catches you in that dive, you're dead meat. He, OTOH, has plenty of earth to which he can direct your missles. It's a bad, bad bet.
GGTharos Posted December 7, 2004 Posted December 7, 2004 Not really; you don't start your dive in visual. You can get the info you want at 25k and 30-40nm away, then make a nice dive and hope your plan works. S77th-GOYA Posted December 8, 2004 Posted December 8, 2004 When you said, "Luck here is important", you weren't kidding. Just picking him up at all on radar alerts him to your presence and heading and gives him a good idea of your range. And as you get your information at 30-40nm from the bandit, how in the world will you know which valley he's in by the time you get near enough to go in after him. Sorry, not this little black duck. (I hope the younger folks understand that reference)
GGTharos Posted December 8, 2004 Posted December 8, 2004 Um, dude, he doesn't have any more info than YOU do. For all he knows you didn't even detect him, you just had your radar banging away and flew by. This isn't something new; it's been done before successfuly and not against n00bs, either. S77th-GOYA Posted December 8, 2004 Posted December 8, 2004 By all means, go get'em then. And good luck.
GGTharos Posted December 8, 2004 Posted December 8, 2004 Been there, done that ... got the kill markers painted on my plane ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
