ShiftBox - A Compact DIY Button Box for VR in the Hornet

The goal was to build something compact and easy to put away when not in use. I added two rows of ‘Shift’ buttons (the red and green buttons) that work as modifiers in DCS. That turns the 26 functions (4 Rotary w/ Push, 7 On-off-on momentary toggles) into 104 possible functions. Wayyyy more than I need, but it’s nice to have room to expand as I get used to the layout.

First stab at mapping buttons. Keeping the shift functions minimal for now until I have the first ‘layer’ memorized. Lots of room to expand!

I hate feeling around for buttons/switches in VR, so I laid them out without repeating patterns of switches. It works really well, and it’s easy enough to feel where my hand is on the box without looking. The sides of the box have Landing Gear and flaps, Radar Knob and extra shift buttons.

The full table-top setup. I share the space with my wife so it had to be easy to set up and take down.

The UFC is a koolertron keypad. That was my gateway drug to building the shift box. VKB Gladiator K and TWCS throttle + magnetic AB detent. With this combo I can have almost every major function in the Hornet covered, except for MFDs… which I haven’t seen a good VR solution for yet.
